JMSS Pro- Tips Portal - Coming Soon!

The ‘JMSS Pro Tips’ website will function as an educational tool to support students with their learning both within and outside of the classroom.

Content uploaded is instructional in nature and will assist students with their understanding of key skills required across all faculty areas. The intention of the site is to help enhance the literacy and numeracy skills of our students. Students will have access to this website via their student portal.

The website is almost completed and will be launched soon.

Year 10 Aquatic Fieldwork

With Covid-19 and the cancellation of all excursions, this Year 10 Aquatic Fieldwork class moved outside and made the most of the fresh air and change of scenery to dissect squid and crabs. The students enjoyed the interactive activity.

Yr 10 Biotechnology

Here are some  Year 10 Biotech students running DIY gel electrophoresis tanks with different variables to model movement of particles through gels - commonly used to separate DNA or protein samples by size for either further scientific tests or for crime scene analysis.

It has been great to get back in the lab for some hands on science! Student teams experimented with the concentration of the gel, concentration of the buffer solution, the different coloured pigments in food dye, different voltage inputs, and two teams compared the DIY poured gels to commercial eGel cartridge machines.

This is only the second time a JMSS class has run this activity (rounded gel photo is some of last year's results) after lab assistant Erika and I developed it through trial and error last year. This semester the lab printed purple 3D gel moulds to improve the gel shape which was another great step in our DIY journey. Next term we will try other variations with the Semester 2 2020 cohort.
