Alumni Spotlight - Jack Breedon

Jack Breedon

Jack graduated in 2013, one of the first cohorts here at JMSS.  For the past 7 years Jack has dedicated himself to life underwater. Make sure you check out his beautiful underwater photos on his Instagram page and his documentaries too!

What have you been doing since you left JMSS?

Started at good ol' Monash uni doing Geoscience and Astrophysics, but it was dryer than drought stricken NSW... So went and did Marine biology at JCU in far north Queensland. Which was significantly wetter. While studying full time there, a friend and I decided to make a documentary about frogs of the wet tropics. We wrote, directed, filmed, produced and funded the project ourselves over the course of two years. It has now won several awards and has been screened in QLD, NSW and VIC by several organisations. Since completing my Undergrad I have been working on and off in Eco-tourism and as a Marine Park Ranger in Victoria. On the side, growing my underwater photography and profile, through which I now am invited to give public lectures on behalf of various conservation organisations. Today I am considered an influential member of the Melbourne diving community and am involved in several campaigns and management projects. Currently: Have started a Masters of Marine Bio at JCU.

During your time as a student at JMSS, what did you like most?

Friday tea-parties in literature class.

Was there anyone who inspired you?

JD. Jonathon Dawson, The School Chaplin

What's your favourite memory of JMSS?

Tie Dying our uniform lab coats and watching everyone squirm when they realised it was fully within the uniform policy.

What advice would you give to the current JMSS Students?

Be noisy. Doesn't matter what your grades are or how intelligent you might be, if no-one notices. You can be an academic disaster (like me) and still achieve a hell of a lot if you put yourself out there

What do you do in your spare time?

Write and produce musicals, make films, wildlife photography, educate people about marine life.... A lot of overlap between my professional and recreational endeavours. Mostly I am just underwater.

What's next for you?

Completing my masters.... Maybe another film along the way.
