Nextwave Youth Film Competition returns for 2020

The search is now on for the next wave of young regional filmmakers, with short film entries open from May 1st – Sept 21st.

Nextwave, presented by the Screenwave International Film Festival (SWIFF), now in its sixth year is host to Australia’s largest regional youth short film competition and is free to enter for young people aged between 10 - 25 years, living outside a metro area.

Short films can range from a variety of genres, including comedies, dramas, thrillers, sci-fi, animation, documentary and personal essays. All that is needed to enter is to make a short film under five minutes (including all credits) and to creatively include the phrase, ‘What’s Next?”

Along with an array of awards and prizes across a variety of age categories, short film finalists will have their films premiere at the 2021 Screenwave International Film Festival (SWIFF) in Coffs Harbour in January. Lucky creatives will also have the opportunity for their films to screen at venues across Australia for Youth Week in April 2021.

The SWIFF team are also working on broadening access to their Nextwave filmmaking workshop program by offering a series of online workshops for teachers and students across Australia. Nextwave’s redesigned workshop program is launching as an online learning experience to be delivered to regional, rural, and remote students across Australia, with the learning program supported by teachers and home-schooling parents available from June.

The commitment is just one morning or afternoon once a month and you’ll meet some lovely people at the same time.

Financial Help

Saver Plus assists individuals and families on lower incomes to build assets and improve financial capability, and has supported thousands of lower income earners to develop a lasting savings habit.

Saver Plus offers:

up to $500 in matched savings for education costs
fun, free and informal financial education workshops
assistance and support from a Saver Plus coordinator to establish a savings goal and develop a savings habit.

Participants make regular deposits towards a savings goal over a 10-month period and attend workshops to build their financial management skills. When participants reach their savings goal, ANZ matches the amount – up to $500 – towards education costs including uniforms, text books, laptops, sports equipment, music tuition, TAFE or apprenticeship costs, and much more.

Participants must meet all of the below criteria:

be at least 18 years old
have a child at school or starting next year, or attend vocational education yourself
have some regular income from your work (you or your partner)
have a Centrelink, Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card
be able to demonstrate a capacity to save after your regular expenses have been paid
have a connection to the area in which the Saver Plus program is run, by living, working, studying or having children at school there
have not received matched funds from Saver Plus before (you or your partner)
be in receipt of an eligible Commonwealth social security benefit, allowance or payment*

Drawing Our Future – Climate Emergency Plan Youth Art Competition

Calling all young artists! Entries are now open for the Mornington Peninsula Shire youth art competition ‘Drawing Our Future’. This competition is an important part of the community consultation for the draft Climate Emergency Plan entitled ‘Ensuring Our Future’, which recently went on public exhibition. The Shire would love young people to be involved by sharing their dream for a sustainable Peninsula through art! You can view the draft Plan and see the variety of ways of providing ideas and feedback by visiting the Have Your Say page . There are two ways to be involved in the art competition: Option One: DRAWING OUR FUTURE - I Care for My Climate (open to ages 3 to 12 years)

Get creative with the colouring in sheet. This can be downloaded by visiting the Climate Emergency Youth Art Competition webpage .
Use your imagination to add colour, animals, trees and lots more!
Crayons, textas, paint, recycled materials and other suitable materials can be used.
Complete the online entry form including having a parent or guardian add consent and upload a high-quality copy of your entry by visiting the Climate Emergency Youth Art Competition webpage .
Entries close at 6pm on Friday 17 July.
Prizes will be awarded to one winner in each age group (Ages 3-5, 6-8, 9-12).

Option Two: DRAWING OUR FUTURE - My Dream for a Sustainable Peninsula in 2030 (open to ages 3 to 18 years)

Start with a blank sheet (maximum A3 sized) and draw your dream for a sustainable Peninsula.
What could the Peninsula look like in 2030 if we look after our environment and climate?
Think more trees and wildlife, more bike riders and walkers, more renewable energy and less waste.
Entries must be a maximum of A3 sized and two dimensional only, crayons, textas, paint, recycled materials and other suitable materials can be used.
Complete the online entry form including having a parent or guardian add consent and upload a high-quality copy of your entry by visiting the Climate Emergency Youth Art Competition webpage .
Entries close at 6pm on Friday 17 July.
Prizes will be awarded to one winner in each age group (Ages 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, 13-15,16-18).
