Assistant Principals' Report

Term 2  2020

Term 2

What a term! The most unique and challenging term in what has been a year unprecedented in living memory. A year in which all of society has had to adapt to a new way of doing things. Never before has our community had to change so quickly and fundamentally to avoid what could easily have been a health catastrophe.

Dromana College has stepped up to the challenge of remote learning and we are proud of how our whole school community has responded. The work that took place across the school by all teachers and education support staff was and continues to be outstanding. This work affirms our collective commitment and focus to provide effective learning for all students irrespective of where that learning takes place. Many staff spent their Easter holidays redeveloping units, building resources and exploring new ways to deliver their learning programs. We saw a range of lessons, practical classes, after-school help, extra-curricular programs and assemblies all held virtually. Our commitment to maintaining this daily ‘face-to-face’ norm provided our students with a sense of normality and connectedness to school in what was quite an isolating time for some. Due to the collective efficacy and skill of our teachers, our students have continued to learn, be challenged and motivated as well as connect in a way that we could not have imagined.

Whilst the remote learning environment has presented unique challenges for all, our senior students have experienced significant disruption to a critical stage of their learning. We would like to thank the teachers who have done an outstanding job in ensuring that as much support and continuity of learning as possible has been maintained. However, we now have certainty about exam dates at the end of the year and can plan around and work towards this end goal. In accordance with this a number of key dates have been revised. Students will be informed of these and they will be updated for viewing on our College calendar. We urge students and parents to familiarise themselves with these important key dates.

Parents too have stepped up to the mark. They have become instructors, tutors and co-learners, while all the time providing emotional support in what has been a challenging and scary time. We thank them for their support of our college learning program and the teachers.

Nothing, however, can replace the energy and buzz of a school overflowing with teachers and students.  The school has been an eerily quiet place, again underlying the fact that a school is not defined by buildings and grounds but by the people that occupy these spaces. it has been wonderful to reconnect with our students and get them back into class with their peers.
