The cool kids

It is Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) week this week. On Monday, our Head of HASS, Andrew Osnain, wore a shirt which had the title; ‘Economics – All the Cool Kids are Doing it!’ As a former Economics’ teacher, the shirt has my full endorsement. A variety of activities were promoted throughout the week to celebrate the learning of Humanities at the College. I love watching the passion of our students and staff when we celebrate and acknowledge different aspects of our College.

It is the first week back for our Pre-Kindy students as well. Congratulations to the students, staff and parents for negotiating a very different drop off to the school which currently precludes parents taking their children to the classroom door. We are appreciative of everyone’s efforts in following the current guidelines.

Continuing the humanities theme, I recently read an excerpt written by the former United States Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice. She shared a quote from the English historian, C.V Wedgwood:

History is lived forwards, but it is written in retrospect.’

It is a particularly apt quote in the current times. In the future, current day leaders from all parts of society will be judged with the benefit of ‘knowing the end’. As time proceeds, we can never fully recapture what it was to know the beginning only.

Our study of humanities fits neatly within our Ignatian paradigm. The learning of Economics, History, Geography and Politics complement the faith dimension of our College and the ability to reflect, examine and pray for the world. It is a good time to look beyond our own boundaries and parameters to seek to be ‘men and women for others’.

It is anticipated that our students will use their education to make the world more just, peaceful and equitable. Well done to our Humanities’ staff and students as they engage in real world issues and challenges. Maybe it is also time for us to make some changes to the way we live our lives in the future!
