Brentwood School Refusal Support Group
Does your child worry and feel anxious to the point where it impacts their ability to attend school? Would you like to gain a greater understanding and learn some helpful strategies to support them?
Research suggests that school refusal is when young people “cannot” rather than “will not” attend school. School refusal behaviours with elements of anxiety affect 1 – 2% of school aged children, and 5 – 15% in clinic referred data. A degree of anxiety is to be expected amongst young people given the various pressures they may face. It becomes problematic, however when it starts to affect a students emotional well-being, or certain aspects, such as the willingness to go to school.
Join us for a four-week support group for parents with students that struggle to attend school. Connect with other parents facing similar dilemmas, challenges and hear from experienced, leading community based practitioners in the field.
The group will commence from 29th August to 19th September. It will start at 4:45pm till 6pm. (Rm TBA) at Brentwood Secondary College.
The support group will help you understand the following:
- What is school refusal.
- How to approach it with my child.
- The school’s role.
- Parents and family’s role.
- What’s helpful and unhelpful.
- Relaxation techniques with tips on building resilience.
- Where to go for more information and support.
This is an original and exciting new concept at Brentwood Secondary College.
Numbers will be restricted to a maximum of 25 initially based upon interest so please contact the front office/admin or the Wellbeing dept and provide a name/contact number to secure your place.
