Intermediate Girls Volleyball
On Thursday 28th of March, the Intermediate Girls Volleyball team headed to the State Volleyball Centre to compete in the Eastern Metropolitan Region competition. The girls showed incredible enthusiasm committing to coming to school on learning conferences day, meaning they gave up having a day off school. They had shown improvement since the division round during training sessions and were ready to go and take on the competition from other schools in the Eastern metro area.
There was some tough competition on the day with the girls competing against teams that have volleyball programs running at their school. They started off the day against tough competition from Kew and the girls unfortunately went down in two sets. The girls had promising moments throughout the game and had some momentum building moments but unfortunately they were out skilled by a better team. Their second game was against Mooroolbark and it was a very tight match. The girls lost the first set but came back in the second and when time ran out they were ahead on points, meaning they were the overall winners. Their third game against Koonung also resulted in a two sets to none win.
The girls finished second in the pool overall, this unfortunately wasn’t enough to progress through to the final. However, the girls should all be really proud of how they played and the skills they have improved on.

Year 8 Boys Volleyball
Two boys’ teams competed at the Springers Leisure Centre on Monday 1st April, coached by Olivia Smith and Jemma Somerville. The sportsmanship demonstrated by the players was fantastic, they put their heart and soul into each game and represented Brentwood as amazing role models for the Year 7’s who were also competing on the same day. The A team came second, with only one loss for the day against Wheelers Hill which went to sudden death in the third set. The B team did not fair so well, loosing narrowly in straight sets all their matches (5 points or less). Congratulations to both teams for a great day out and a huge thank you to Olivia and Jemma for running and organising our coaching sessions.

Term 1 Sport Roundup!
What a term! The 10 weeks of term 1 has definitely been action packed and full of sport. So many opportunities for students to get involved; as an athlete, a student coach or helper, and as a spectator. Brentwood students have competed at the two House carnivals in Athletics & Swimming, the Monash Division round robin days for Summer sport (Junior, Inter and Senior), Lawn bowls, and at both the Monash Division swimming and EMR swimming championships. House lunchtime activities including water balloon relays and dodgeball kept students busy.
We had our first team qualify for the State finals: the Intermediate girl’s tennis team coached by Mr Kieran Shah. They beat Rowville Sports Academy in the EMR final!! Outstanding achievement!
EMR Swimming
Congratulations to the Brentwood swimmers who competed at the EMR swim championships last week. The quality of competition from the schools in the EMR is extremely high. When competing, in a very tough pool of talent, our students were placing top 6 in a field of 10. This is a wonderful effort. It was great to see two of our relay teams take home bronze medals; the girls 13 freestyle relay team, and the boys 15 freestyle relay team. Well done!
A special mention to Hyukwon Choi (year 12) who medalled in all 5 of his individual events with 3 bronze medals and 2 silver medals. A fantastic achievement!
At the recent Monash Division Swimming, Brentwood had 6 students awarded the age champion medal. These students earned the most points in their age group for their school. Congratulations to:
Yun Lee (13yr), Cy Hodge (15yr), Jasmine Dayment (16yr), Lauren Tran (17yr), Michelle Zhong (20yr) and Hyukwon Choi (20yr).
Student Achievement
Chelsea Leach
Chelsea has been selected to represent TeamVic in softball later this year. A fantastic opportunity and recognition of your skill and dedication to softball. Well done!
Students from all schools affiliated with School Sport Victoria can nominate for selection for a TeamVic team. (More information on the SSV website).
Spencer Storan & Will Pearce
Both Spencer & Will are currently competing at 2019 Australian Athletics Championships held at Sydney’s Olympic Park. Go Boys! I’m sure we will hear their achievements when they return next term.
Gemma Cornell
Gemma in year 11 (Green House) has been selected as part of the U17 Australian Softball Squad! She will be travelling to America in June holidays to play softball for this squad. Awesome, huge achievement!
What’s on in term 2?
Student sign up took place this week for the sports on offer in term 2 : AFL, Soccer, Netball & Badminton for students in year 7 to 12, and Hockey and Basketball for our seniors. If you forgot to sign up to express your interest in trying out for a team please see Miss Nash early next term.
Student Coach Applications are now open for the term 2 sports; AFL, Soccer, Netball & Badminton. These close on Friday April 26.
Cross Country
Monash Division cross country will take place on May 23. More information about selection trials will be available early next term - keep your eyes on the daily student bulletin and compass news feed. All girls and the boys in 13, 14 & 15 age groups will be running the 3km event. Boys in the 16 and 17-20 age groups run 5km. If you are a keen runner, the holidays are a great time to start/continue training towards making the team!
Sport Uniform
We have had a large number of sports teams out this term and 98% of the students competing looked like a Brentwood athlete. We represent Brentwood SC; not Nike, not Adidas, and not the local sporting club. As it will get colder next term, please ensure your child is wearing the navy track pants, school rugby jumper, and school jacket. Leggings are not part of our sport uniform.
Thank you to the parents who support and enforce our sport uniform. I am proud of Brentwood and our uniform and I hope the students are too.
Consent
Unfortunately some students missed out on competing this term due to not consenting/paying in time. For all school sports days/events, consent must be obtained two school days prior to event. If you are having trouble consenting, contact (phone call/email) must be made with the school office prior to the due date.
Stay fit & healthy over the break and I can’t wait to see what we achieve with sport in term 2.
