Primary & Infants Particulars

Primary

Well once again we've had a busy time in the primary classrooms this past fortnight. A particular highlight was the NRL Come Try Day at the Boorowa Showground and while the weather wasn't on our side for most of the day, our students showed plenty of skill and good sportsmanship. Many thanks to our parent helpers and supporters throughout the day.

The Year 5/6 class have begun a 'Coding' unit of work in computing, which has showed that the children are definitely talented programmers, often becoming teachers in their own right throughout our lessons! We also created some fantastic poetry for Harmony Day which is on display in the classroom; and have begun 'buddies' with Mrs Proudford's K/1 class.

The Year 3/4 class has been busy studying addition and subtraction and some games have been given to the students to help, as part of our core skills of mathematics.  Any extra revision of addition and subtraction at home would be helpful.

As part of the History unit on Change and the Community

Yr 3/4  will be participating in a town walk on Thursday 11 April with Mrs Miller from the local Historical Society.  They will be focusing on the change in use of buildings.

From the 14th-16th May 2019 year 3 and year 5 students will be undertaking mandatory NAPLAN tests. We as a school place no added pressure on the children taking these tests or on the results.  They are undertaken as part of the usual cycle of learning. In order for students to get used to the layout and style of the tests, a sample pack will be sent home with each year 3 and year 5 student prior to the holidays. These are not mandatory to be completed, but it would assist the children and parents/carers to understand what they consist of. Completed tests should be brought into your child's teacher. If you have any questions, please see Mr Stuart or Mrs Harpley.

NRMA Road Safety and Science Day

Kate from the NRMA Road Safety team provided K-6 students with valuable road safety information on Wednesday and presented it in a fun and engaging way. Students learned key safety messages about seat belts, road crossing and how to correctly fit and wear their helmets. Please take the opportunity to discuss these issues with your children, they will be doing follow up work in class using booklets supplied by the NRMA aligned to curriculum outcomes.

Cross Country

Infants students enjoyed participating in the whole school Cross Country Carnival. They have been practicing building up their stamina and the importance of pacing themselves in longer races during sports lessons. This knowledge usually kicks in about half way through a long distance race for our younger students and this year was not different. They started with enthusiasm and the smiles stayed on their faces right to the end. They enjoyed the opportunity to play games and have a sausage sandwich after their long run.

Lastly, a huge congratulations to students and staff for a fantastic first term! Infants students have worked hard with their learning and teachers have continually provided fun and engaging ways to learn. We wish all students and families and happy and restful holiday break, enjoy the Easter weekend and we look forward to term 2!

Library Matters

Monitors from Years 3 to 6 help make sure the collection resources are correctly shelved, easy to find and available for all borrowers.

Monitors learn how to help fellow students find books they may enjoy reading for pleasure and sometimes read aloud to Infants who like to come up to the library during lunchtimes especially during the cold winter months.  Board games are also supplied for lunch time entertainment and friendly competition and jigsaws are available. Children who choose to do homework or assignment/project work have access to an excellent print collection and may use the computers to complete and print work often with monitors giving a hand.

I am very proud of how our library monitors are always so enthusiastic and reliable.

Year 5/6 are Introduced to Shakespeare.

Currently in Library lesson time, Year 5/6 are learning about the plays of the great 'Bard,' William Shakespeare. Students have enthusiastically paired off, chosen a play and are studying the different characters and story lines of some of Shakespeare's 37 plays.

Next term students will be involved in choosing a 5 -10 minute part of their chosen play, select cast members from among their peers and learn how to narrate the chosen section to give guidance to their cast members in relation to words and movement. All students are excited and engaged in learning about the literature of this famous writer.

What's Cooking

This week in Stephanie Alexander Kitchen, the Yrs 1/2 and 5/6 made savoury pinwheels.

 Savoury Pinwheels

1/2 an onion diced

1/2 a rasher of bacon.

Spread 1 tablespoon of tomato paste over a sheet of puff pastry leaving about a 2cm strip.

Spread the bacon, onion, 1/3 cup of grated cheese and a sprinkle of mixed herbs onto pastry.

Roll pastry into a pinwheel. Carefully cut the roll every 2/3cm, placing the cut pieces on a tray.  Place into a preheated oven 190 degrees and bake until golden brown.

This was a very popular recipe. Every single pinwheel was eaten and nothing was left!
