Teacher Professional Learning Opportunities

Recently, Ms Tyson and Ms Harris attended conferences in Sydney for Stage 6 teachers.

The first conference specifically dealt with the newly introduced English syllabuses, and focused on one of the mandatory modules ( The Craft of Writing), a range of text choices for both the Standard and Advanced courses, and multimodal assessments. The sessions provided teachers with an excellent ‘toolkit’ of relevant resources and ideas for teaching English in the senior school.

On Saturday, the History Teachers Association of NSW hosted a Stage 6 History Teachers’ Day. Again, many practical strategies were given, as well as presenters speaking at length about the changes to the courses, HSC examinations and assessments. Modern and Ancient History were given equal attention at the conference, and the opportunity to network and speak with very experienced teachers and university lecturers was a highlight. Some of the sessions attended were Engaging with the Soviet National Study, What’s New in Pompeii and Herculaneum, Agrippina the Younger and Core Work and Assessment.

Maths Matters

Year 11 Mathematics Advanced students have been utilising the future focused learning space as an expansive canvas (whiteboard walls) to solve complex algebraic problems with the space and flexibility to demonstrate their deep understanding of the complexities of the problems and their subsequent solutions. The students have been racing each other with questions and creating problems of their own.

These students are the first to attempt the new Mathematics Advanced syllabus and have found the course challenging but exciting as they attempt many problems that their teacher encountered back at university. Next week they dive into some calculus!

Art Antics

9/10 Visual Arts have been working hard this term on the "Altered Books and Text" program.

They have researched artists such as collage artist Kurt Schwitters, Australian artist Jenny Watson, and the Book of Kells, when making their artworks.

The students have used various materials and techniques to make their art including painting with acrylics and water colours, collage, drawing and sculpture.
