Year 7 Buddy Program

Sometimes You Just Need A Buddy

Establishing positive role models and giving Year 7 student mentees the skills to deal with conflict, build resilience and improve communication and problem solving skills lies at the heart of a terrific new mentoring program initiated this year by Year 7 Advisor, Mr James Vella.

Mr Vella designed a program that focuses on activities that Year 7 students and their Year 10 mentor can do to develop these skills.

‘The program has been running since the beginning of the year and includes a variety of activities, for example students defining  what resilience actually is and what good communication looks like.’ Mr Vella explained.

‘Then as a group we discuss each of these things and get the students to model it by either solving a problem or role playing situations of conflict where for instance better communication could be used for a more positive outcome.’

‘The program has really helped to create a quick and strong bond between Year 7 and Year 10 students.'

Through discussions with Year 10 Advisor, Ms Stephenie Blewitt, we carefully matched each Year 7 student with a Year 10 buddy most suited to them.’

‘It’s been heartening to see the level of care the Year 10 students have expressed and demonstrated towards their mentee and Year 7.’

‘We’re taking a long-term approach with this program and will keep building on it each year to increase its impact.’

Year 7 mentee, Sarah-Jane Horne said she had really enjoyed the program and felt it made a difference. 'I also like getting to 'hang out' with students in year 10.  I feel like I know more people at the school now.'

For Sarah-Jane's mentor, Ashleigh Ross it has also been a  positive experience. 'I have really enjoyed being  part of the buddy program. I think it helps Year 7 students feel more welcome at the school when they first arrive. Personally, it has been fun getting to know my two Year 7 buddies and it has made me step outside of my comfort zone. I am a shy person so it's been good for me too.'
