Sports Report

Good afternoon everyone,

The last couple of weeks have been very hectic on the sporting front at Cobram AGS, where a plethora of interschool sport has taken place from Year 5 – 11.

On Thursday, May 23rd, students from Years 9-11 (Senior Boys’ Badminton team from Yr 11) travelled to Shepparton and surrounding areas to participate in the Goulburn-Murray Secondary School Division’s Winter sports day. Student were involved in Badminton, Basketball, Netball and Ten Pin Bowling. The day was a great success with our Senior Boys’ Badminton team (Miles Curtin, Carlo Ditchon, Shem Swoffer and Bailey White) winning their 5th consecutive GM title. This team was joined by the Intermediate Girls’ team (Meghan Gossayn, Emma Nolan, Ally Trives and Lauren White; Grace Stillard injured), who will now challenge for the Hume Region title for the 3rd consecutive year. We also had some success on the bowling front, where the 9/10 team took out the trophy!!! Thanks to all the staff members, who came along to supervise and manage teams. With all sports now on the one day, it makes it a challenge to secure staffing, especially when a sport is catered for over 3 different venues!!! Big thank you to Mrs Duhring for all her work and effort in making this possible!

On Friday, May 24th, two netball teams and one soccer team from our Year 5/6 cohort again ventured to Shepparton to compete in the Goulburn-Murray interschool competition. The soccer team faired reasonably well, where they won 2 games, drew 1 and lost 2. The A netball team won 3 of their 5 games whilst the B team won 2 of their 5. Unfortunately, the A team were announced as a finalist and were lined up ready to go before organisers realised a mistake had been made and the girls were replaced by the rightful participants. All in all, a great day was had by all. Thanks to Miss Wannis and Mrs Post for helping out and assisting.

The Year 7/8 students participated in their GMDSSV sports day on Tuesday, 28th May and, again, there were some wonderful results. Our Year 8 Girls Badminton team (Hannah Logie, Emily Orsida, Cadence Pang, Natasha Smith and Caitlin Welch) , who made it to the State final last year in Year 7, were a cut above the opposition and put on a clinical display, reclaiming the GMDSSV title for the second year running. Our netballers did a wonderful job in extremely trying weather conditions, where they gave it their all and were very competitive in the Year 7 Division 2 and Year 8 Division 1 competitions. Thanks to Mrs Ross and Regan Fox (Year 9) for their assistance with the teams. Very greatly appreciated. Mr Downie and the basketballers enjoyed a great day of matches, where the A team finished in 4th place overall in the Year 7 competition. Thanks once again to all the teachers who helped out on the day!

To top it all off, Friday, 31st May, saw 15 of our students involved in the GMDSSV Cross-country event, which was again held in Shepparton in the bushlands and tracks around the Princess Park complex. We will have more news for you in our next Crier edition.

On the individual front, we still have some students up for selection in the School Sports Victoria State trials. Zahlia Kautai (Touch Football), Mackenzie O’Dwyer (Netball) and Sonny Rowe (Soccer)  are still in the hunt, whilst, unfortunately, Bella Pardy and Helena Zito (Soccer), and Sam Trembath (AFL) missed out after travelling to Melbourne for the Vic. Country selections, narrowly missing the cut. I take this opportunity to thank these students and their parents for the wonderful effort and commitment in making it this far in the process. I cannot remember a time where we have had so many individuals progressing to this stage so well done to all of you! Good luck to the other two students as they continue the quest for state selection.

As you can see, it has been extremely busy and fairly exhausting but I would not have it any other way!!! Go Team CAGS!!!
