Student Reflections

Year 11

by Yechelle Fernando & Kristine Hong

Year 11 has once again been kickstarted for Term Two. Essentially, as week three of this Term has begun, already so much has happened! From sports to music, and the much anticipated opening of the Tullow building and I believe many more good things are yet to come as this year progresses. Feeling renewed and motivated, classes are being met with much enthusiasm, and a flourishing drive to succeed. From my personal observations, an air of humour is drifting around the Year 11 cohort, creating a second Term filled with life and joy, which will hopefully continue to be filled with many more refreshing positive emotions. Year 11 so far, has been a handful. Transitioning from online learning in Year 10, to VCE, has been a challenge but, as this term begins, I find myself sufficiently equipped to deal with the stresses, pressures and challenges that this new stage of learning has to offer. Although my skills and strengths in this area are not perfect yet, the beginning of Term 2 has marked a year of polishing and nurturing the strengths and strategies that have already been instilled in me. These first three weeks have involved much learning on many different levels and forms. For me, these weeks have been long, and yet I find myself looking forward to all that this year will have to offer.

Fit to Drive

By Trisha Ilangkovan Year 11

Last week on the 6th of May, the Year 11s had the opportunity to be involved in a program which raises awareness about the safety of young drivers on Victorian roads. The day was arranged by members of the Fit 2 Drive association, hosting multiple activities for students throughout the day, inviting special guests to provide insight on certain issues concerning distractions, law/regulations and the general safety, needed to highlight the importance of road safety. The Fit 2 Drive association gave us an introduction to the concerns of having inattentive drivers on the road and the major impact this approach when driving will eventually lead to, if further continued. This provided an overview of the topics we would discuss among small groups and later as a collective.

Kimberley from the Fit 2 Drive association, reinforced certain rules students were required to follow with the most important rule being, to have fun! Which we most certainly did! In our small groups, we expanded on the general issues of road safety, brainstorming the distractions, comparing high and low risks in failing to adhere to road regulations and much more. It was an exciting and engaging experience to get the Yr 11s involved and feel comfortable in voicing new ideas and personal stories.

I believe the most thrilling events would be when the Australian Police and Fireforce came in and talked to us, providing powerful statistics resulting from current figures of drivers in Victoria today and sharing a story of the consequence of disobeying the regulations placed for road safety. The fireman, Dale, displayed an interactive, inspiring and at time humorous presentation explaining a scenario which encouraged us to follow the laws placed in road safety despite any circumstances.

This program was very informative for the Year 11s especially since many of us will be driving on roads beginning this year. Thanks to Fit 2 Drive association we are able to feel more responsible and prepared to initiate our driving.
