Year 8 Futsal
On Thursday October 24, NHS fielded two teams in the Year 8 girls’ Futsal Round-Robin competition, held at Reservoir High School. Both teams had success in a number of games, and showed great skill and sportspersonship. They were excellently behaved, and showed gratitude in being thankful to Stan and Liam, our coaches on the day. Well done to all!
Congratulations to our Yr 9/10 Girls' Futsal teams who competed in the Darebin Futsal Cup on October 10. Both of our girls teams won their way through the competition with it coming down to the wire with Northcote Gold coming out on top by just 2 points ahead of Northcote Purple. This meant Northcote Gold then qualified to play in the next round on Tuesday October 22. The girls won all of their games in their pool to play off in the semi-finals against St Johns. After defeating St Johns 5-4, they then played off in the Grand Final against John Fawker where they defeated them 3 – 2 to become overall winners. Well done team, you played some very tough matches and should be proud to come home with the Darebin Futsal Cup Trophy.
Congratulations to our Yr 9/10 Boys' Futsal teams who recently competed in the Divisional Futsal Competition at Reservoir High School. We entered 3 teams in the competition. In the A Pool Northcote Gold came up against some tough opposition and came away with 1 win and 2 losses. In the B and C Pools both of our teams finished off on top of their pools. After both teams winning the semi-finals they then played off in the grand final. In a close match, Northcote 10’s had a narrow victory over Northcote 9’s.
Well done to our Year 9/10 Boys' and Girls' Basketball Teams who competed in the Regionals on October 17. Both teams had some tough matches throughout the day and both came 2nd in their pools.
Thank you to our student coach Rinchen Dorjee and to our Staff Coaches Cathy Lester and Dave Macindoe.
This year we had 13 students qualify to compete in the State Athletics Championship at Albert Park on October 18. Congratulations to:
Emily Panopoulos – 5th in Triple Jump with a personal best jump of 10.05m
Sarah Whitty - 5th in the 800m
Doug Buckeridge - 1st in the 800m
Grace Young - 5th in the 1500m Walk
Once again Northcote's favourite distance across many age groups seems to be the 1500m races. In this event, we had:
Doug Buckeridge - 1st
Tom Butler - 13th
Archie Noakes - 1st
Amira Tabit - 5th
Niamh Tabit - 1st
Mikaila Young - 5th
Our last competitors for the evening were our 14-year girls' Relay Team who came in 5th.
Congratulations to all of our State Athletes, they all work so hard at achieving some pretty amazing goals. It was lovely to see so many family members enjoying watching them compete.
As Term 4 begins and the weather starts to somewhat improve, the long wait for our Year 7 and 8 Cricketers is over.
Girls' Northern Region Teams
A great effort by all of our cricketers playing in a modified Super 8’s tournament. Our Year 8 Girls' team coached by Minnie O’Sullivan won one of their three matches. Our Year 7 Girls' team lost to Melbourne Girls but rebounded in the 8 team competition to make the grand final. Although they lost in the final they showed great improvement and determination. Minnie who played in our boys' Cricket team is on a recruiting drive to get more of our girls to play club Cricket on the weekends.
Craig Price, Coach
Boys' and Mixed Teams
These teams won their division in Term 1 and have had to hibernate over the winter waiting for the regional competition to arrive. Over two days Wednesday 16th - Year 8 Mixed and Tuesday the 22nd - Year 7 Boys' cricket teams competed at JC Donath reserve for a chance to play in their respective regional finals. Unfortunately, both teams were only able to notch one win from their three matches but fought hard all day. One of the many highlights from the Year 8 competition was Connor Hastings (27 not out) and Ned Goodwin (36 not out) unbeaten partnership of 63 runs to win the game against Brunswick High School. In the Year 7 competition, we saw some exciting big hitting from Thomas Sweetman and an amazing Hatrick by Keir Lucas. Congratulations to all players.
A special thank you to umpires and coaches Max Daphne and William Nicholls and Harry Ellis of Year 9 and Minnie O’Sullivan of Yr 8. Their help and coaching of the younger students was invaluable.

On Wednesday, October 23 our Yr 7 & 8 Hockey teams competed in the Regionals at Greensborough Hockey Club.
Our girls and boys both finished second to Princes Hill after playing some impressive Hockey. Their energy and skill enabled both teams to bring home red pennants. Year 7 stars Scarlett Kinder - 2 goals and Lucy Pellegrini - 1 goal were our main goal scorers. A big thank you to our Student Coach Hannah Eldridge for coaching our juniors.
Congratulations to our Yr 8 Table Tennis team who dominated the Regional Competition to win all of their games to finish on top of their pool. They then to played off and won in the final where they defeated Gladstone Park in straight sets. The team played some great table tennis and only dropped 2 sets for the whole day. They now move through to the State Finals on November 29.
On Thursday 24 October Isaac Bartley, Ed Hirst, Dean Karamandis, Jarrah Kearney, Jay Lynch and Jack Shulz competed in the Regional finals at the Coburg Table Tennis Club. There were eight teams competing in two pools of four. The three other teams in Northcote’s pool were University High School, Macleod College and Hume Anglican Grammar. Each rubber consisted of four singles and two doubles, best of three sets. Northcote beat all three opponents 6-0.
In the final we came up against the winner of the other pool, Ilim College. For the final it was best of five sets. Before the final singles was completed we had won two and Ilim had won one. In the fourth singles we had won the first two sets but then Ilim came back and won the next two. All the team and teachers gathered round to watch the last set of last singles. Isaac Bartley rose to the occasion and won the last set.

Well done to our Yr 8 Girls' Basketball team who recently competed in the Regionals at Coburg Stadium. Unfortunately due to study commitments the team were left without their student coaches to guide them.
Although the girls were a little disappointed they understood. On and off the court the team should be really proud of themselves. They all worked together well and stepped up as player-coaches talking tactics and suggesting how to shut down their opposition. In their first match, they defeated Mt Ridley by 2 points. In their second and toughest match, they went down to Melbourne Girls College. In their third and final match for the day they easily defeated Macleod. Thank you to our parents who come down to support the girls, especially Susie Stafford who scored all of our matches.
