DANCE IN OUR TIME

On Monday March 29, The Australian Ballet’s Education unit came to Beaumaris Secondary College to conduct a Dance workshop with Years 9 and 10 students enrolled in the Dance in Our Time specialism. Students learnt excerpts from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ as well as the design process that goes into the staging of a ballet. Students were then lucky enough to watch a 30 minute version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Here are reflections from some students on the experience:

“Their clear movements and expression made the play so easy to understand , without them even having to explain anything. They taught us how actions speak louder than words.” – Nicola

“When gazing at the dances I noticed how spoken language wasn't used, communication was shown to us through the movements and facial expressions. I could feel the emotion bouncing off the dancers and onto the audience.” – Lara

“ I loved seeing the beautiful technique that these dancers have and the practise they put in to get into this place.” – Holly

“ I enjoyed how they taught us new techniques and got us involved in the workshop and I really enjoyed watching their performance because it was so emotional and it looked so elegant and beautiful.” – Jodie

“ I really enjoyed watching the performance and getting to participate in the workshop. I also liked how they explained the behind the scenes work of the costume and set designers, and the importance of doing an active warmup.” – Bella

“ I enjoyed when we had to change the choreography they gave us to make it unique and our own, it was a really cool exercise to learn to work with other people and learn how to improve a movement if we weren't happy with it and didn’t know what to do. I feel that this is going to be really helpful for any future dances that I choreograph.” - Lua
