Y9 & 10 BEST Specialism

Marine Sanctuary (Y9&10 BEST Specialism)

During Term 1 the Year 9 & 10 Marine Sanctuary specialism have enjoyed some great experiences exploring Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary and the underwater world of Port Phillip Bay.  As part of our course students have completed 3 dives at Ricketts Point to explore a variety of our local reefs.  In class we have studied adaptations or marine organisms and it has great to use our snorkeling sessions at Ricketts Point to make a connection with the species we have studied. Students also participated in a boat dive at Portsea where we visited an offshore reef at Popes Eye and had the opportunity to swim with seals. The dive at Portsea was a great contrast to our snorkel sessions at Ricketts Point and it certainly delivered an amazing experience as the playful seals buzzed around us. Back at Ricketts Point students undertook their Term 1 PBL, which involved population sampling to study a variety of intertidal reef species allowing them to test their hypothesis about the distribution of the different species. During Term 2 students will study human impacts at Ricketts Point.
