Marine Ambassadors

Marine Ambassadors - Term 1

The Marine Ambassadors group involves students at Beaumaris Secondary College who are interested in learning about our marine environment and looking after Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary. During term 1 our Year 8, 9 and 10 Marine Ambassadors participated in a snorkel session exploring the reefs at Ricketts Point.  This year we had some amazing weather for our snorkels and it was great to see many of our local species such sea urchins, sting rays, abalone sea stars, fish (flathead zebrafish and schools of garfish); however, the highlight for many of us was our time with the Banjo Sharks (Fiddler Rays).

During Term 1 we have also welcomed a number of Year 7 students to the group and look forward to them being involved in our program this year. At the moment students are planning their next event, which will be a visit to the intertidal reef to investigate introduced crab species. We are particularly interested in looking for a recently introduced species – The Asian Shore Crab.
