Board games or bored games?

Students at St Edward's are enjoying opportunities to turn off the technology and play some board games with their friends. The Chess Club meet each Thursday to enjoy some competitive match play which is challenging their logical thinking. Competitors meet across the table and battle between themselves to see who can outwit their opponent and 'checkmate' the king. Beginner players are always welcome and are encouraged to join us in the Year 6 classrooms during Thursday lunchtime where you can learn all about the wonderful world of chess! Here's why we love playing chess:

"Chess is a really fun game to play and I enjoy challenging my friends," (Izayah, Year 6).

"I get to learn new skills," (Charlie, Year 6).

"It's a competitive game and I get to play against my friends",  (Lam, Year 6)

"I enjoy playing with other people and learning about the game," (Georgia, Year 6).

Another exciting addition at school has been the popular tile game 'Bananagrams'. This is being used in Guided Reading at the Primary campus to help support students with word building activities. Players use the tiles they have collected to see how many words they can create and arrange together.

Playing board games has a wide range of benefits and they are a great way to unplug. Board games can:

  • offer opportunities for early learning,
  • boost language skills,
  • increase brain function,
  • sharpen focus,
  • teach the value of teamwork,
  • soothe anxiety,
  • and even show us how to be a good winner and a good loser!
