Chess Club Success at McCarthy Catholic College

The end of Term 1 has been a busy time for the McCarthy Chess Club. Our players have travelled and visited both Oxley High School and Manilla Central School to play friendly matches against players from these schools. This proved valuable practise time for those involved. I would like to express my appreciation to Mrs Nell Chaffey from Oxley High School and Mr James Galloway from Manilla Central High School for helping to arrange these games.

On Friday, 26 March, our players travelled to play against Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School in the first round of the NSW Junior Chess League, North West Regional Division. The Collegewas represented by Elih Griffiths (Year 11), Kevin Bui (Year 7), Tom Vuong (Year 7) and Damon Williams (Year 9). Well done to these four players who defeated Farrer and ensured McCarthy progressed to the next round.

A big well done goes to all players who have travelled this term to play chess, either as part of the representative team or as social players. Thanks to Elih Griffiths, Kevin Bui, Tom Vuong, Damon Williams, Emily Pring, John Nguyen, Jake Condon, Matt Manzano and Halley Buckman. All these players were great ambassadors for the College and continue to develop their chess playing skills.

Next term, there will be multiple opportunities for play against other schools including St Mary’s (Gunnedah), O'Connor and The Armidale School (Armidale) and the local schools of Carinya and Calrossy.

Those who would like to learn the ancient game of chess or would like to play either as part of the representative team or socially are welcome to join the McCarthy Chess club next term.
