HEADSTART-

Off to a flying start!

KDC

After a turbulent 2020, Tiana Markovic wanted to start 2021 with a bang!

A current Year 12 student at KDC, Tiana came across the Head Start program through a friend who had signed up to Head Start in order to get a ‘Head Start’ in their chosen career. After doing a bit of research, she discovered that, through the program, she could start her Hairdressing Apprenticeship whilst completing Year 12.

In December 2020, she successfully gained a Head Start Apprenticeship with Renew Hair in Altona, where she currently works part-time as an apprentice hairdresser whilst also attending school and working towards her Senior certificate.

I visited Tiana on the job last week to see how she was settling into her dream job:

What do you love the most about your job?

I love the creativity, being able to make clients feel happy and beautiful. Also, love the variety and alternating routine between working, school and TAFE.

I like that I have a clearly set schedule each week so I know what I’m doing, when and where. So far, I’ve been able to learn how to do blow waves, wash hair, tints and tones, blow dry, styling and generally just love being able to interact with different clients all the time.

What’s been the biggest challenge for you?

Biggest challenge for me has probably been adjusting to a work schedule. Also managing school and work, sometimes after a long day at work and on my feet, I get home late and very tired, then I have to go to school the next day. But I love my work so I would not have it any other way.
