Student Leadership at BHS

As a leadership cohort we have been extremely busy this year. Our year 12’s have led the way in 2021 with great pride and hard work. They have been superb in organising and participating in all school events. They have planned and facilitated a whole school assembly (the first since early last year), they have also assisted in the promotion of the junior school election process, as well as assisting staff and students with the school athletics, swimming and cross country. The year 12 leaders look forward to spending the remaining part of this term meeting with our junior school leaders and planning their key fundraising events.

As mentioned, during term one we held elections for student leaders in years 7-9, leaders have been identified by their peers for having a clear understanding of our school values, as well as being role models within their class and our school community. They will have some wonderful opportunities to lead their year level assemblies and work alongside our senior leaders to plan and run fundraising events throughout the year. Year 10 leaders are busy in both peer support and leadership roles and will be working with Mr Mathison this term to focus on being a clear and approachable presence for junior student support.

The year 11 students are looking at one of the most exciting opportunities in leadership this year, they have a leadership conference in week 4 and a short list of students have been selected, 35 students are invited to attend the onsite conference. Students will take part in workshops run by staff, alumni and Leading Teams Australia (LTA). LTA is a company that have extensive experience in the delivery of performance improvement programs (in government, education, corporate and elite sport).

The main portion of the conference is based on working within a group to develop a presentation and implementation plan aiming to improve our school, the theme is ‘student connectedness’. After the conference, students will decide whether they want to nominate for leadership in 2022 and their next step will be developing a personal profile so they can be voted for.

If you know of any leadership opportunities or events that our students should be involved in or supporting, please contact Miss McLean.
