Good theatre sports!

early this term,  we held the 2nd Annual BSC House TheatreSports Competition. Throughout the week, students from every year level improvised together in their house teams in front of crowds of more than 100 students in the audience!

You may have seen something similar on Whose Line is it Anyway? but basically, Theatresports is a series of timed games which place a focus on the idea of ‘offers’. An offer is where a performer suggests something which could happen in a scene. The offer can be either accepted by a team-mate (in which case the scene will advance) or be blocked (in which case the scene is effectively killed). The ideal situation for a Theatresports game is for offers to be accepted and built upon so as the scene is constantly developing and growing.

It was fantastic seeing students have fun and give it a go. It was especially pleasing to see students MC each show, as well as run sound and lighting, judge the competition, and support each other every day in this great competition!

The Intermediate Competition (Years 7, 8 and 9), was outstanding -   ABYAD house proved to be the victor - while the  Senior Competition saw LAN SE defending their 2020 title and coming up trumps again!  Back-to-back titles!

Lan Se Team Captain - Senior

On Monday, the 3rd of May the 2021 Brunswick Secondary College TheatreSports competition began. We kicked it off with Oro and Caagar competing on the first day, with Oro and Caagar claiming their first victories. On the second day – Lan Se faced off against Abyad – the senior division was particularly exciting with the Lan Se seniors winning by just one point. On Wednesday, Abyad’s intermediate team took out a win whilst Oro’s Senior team claimed success, while on Thursday Lan Se and Caagar played with the Caagar intermediate team winning and Lan Se’s Senior team succeeding in gaining their second win and securing their place in the finals.

The finals were held on Friday 7th of May, and we had a team representing each house! Competing in the Intermediate competition was Oro vs. Abyad, and in the Senior division was Caagar vs. Lan Se.

It was a very entertaining week for everyone both watching and playing, but of course there had to be some sort of winner. The winners for the intermediate team were Abyad, and the winners for the Senior Team were Lan Se!

Congratulations to the winning teams but also well done to everyone for participating and coming to watch the games, which wouldn’t have been the same without without you.

TheatreSports is a competition in which teams competitively play improvising games. In every round two houses play each other. Each Brunswick House had a team in the Intermediate (Years 7 to 9) and Senior (Years 10 to 12) divisions; teams fought it out in heats to determine who went on to the final. At the start of each round, the team captains come up and play a coin toss to determine which house will go first and second for the day's games.

In every round, each team chooses two Improv Games to play and after each game the judges give a score out of 5. The scores are then added up and… Voila! You have the winners. The four teams (two senior teams and two intermediate teams) that have amassed the most points by the end of the week play in the final. In the final, instead of having free reign to choose their own games, each team is challenged to include something in their performance, which adds an extra layer of difficulty.

Overall the competition was a great experience and one I look forward to doing again!
