Reading
This term sees us continuing to develop independent reading abilities and stamina through the Reader's Workshop. This is an opportunity for students to explore the stories and authors they love best. Children will also continue to engage in Book Club, discussing not only the book they are reading, but delving deeper into their understanding and preferences.
Children will also explore several key areas of reading, such as text features (graphics, captions and graphs) and text structure (for example: chapters, paragraphing and chronology) in addition to investigating and comparing media texts.
Writing
We continue to use the Writer's Workshop as a platform to allow children the flexibility to write about what they like and are interested in. Lessons will focus on differing aspects of writing, such as: 'Planting Seeds' - how to stockpile ideas to give them material to develop at a later date. They then develop those ideas via the use of visual organisers or planning to create a structured base from which to write. Vocabulary, how to create and use a bank of adjectives and adverbs, as well as character traits in order to improve the detail of the writing forms part of this process. Revising, how to reread their work in order to improve their writing via VCOP to assist them is the next step. Followed by editing, how to proofread to find errors, mistakes and inconsistencies with a final conference with their teacher.
We will also be focusing on persuasive writing, information texts and narratives.
Spelling and Grammar:
There are specific focus areas that form part of our spelling and grammar lessons. These include consolidating the children's understanding of the phonogram rules and looking at punctuation, tense and parts of speech (such as nouns, adjectives and verbs).
