Grade 6 Leaders’ Badges

At last Friday’s Scotsburn assembly, our Grade 6 leaders were presented with their Leaders’ Badges. It has been unfortunate that they had a delay arriving, however it is wonderful that they can be recognised in this way and they were certainly very proud to receive them. All of our Grade 6 leaders have been wonderful role models for our younger students, and we look forward to them helping lead the campus during the second half of the year.

Scotsburn Morning Routines

This term, all three classes are commencing a much more collaborative approach to our spelling program. This will involve us utlising the opportunity to have students work at different levels across our classrooms, completing spelling lessons that can be more accurately differentiated. We will be completing these sessions four times per week, starting at 9am. With this in mind, it is important that we start our classroom days at 9am, with all students in the classroom, ready for learning. We understand that at times it may be difficult to get your child/children to school by 9am, however where possible, we ask that students arrive between 8:45am and 8:55am to allow them to get themselves organised and in the classroom, ready for learning by 9am.

A reminder also that on occasions, Scotsburn staff may have morning meetings at Buninyong, with us not being able to guarantee supervision prior to 8:30am. Please take this into consideration when organising your morning drop off routines. We appreciate your assistance with this organisation.

Family Groups

Last week in Family Groups, we reflected on NAIDOC week through making Lemon Myrtle scones, as well working artistically with the natural surroundings. We also played some fun cooperation games in the shed.

Parent Committee Morning Tea and Catch Up

Next Tuesday morning (25th July), we will hold a morning tea for our parent committee and anyone else who would like to come along. This will provide a great chance to catch up, as well as discuss some plans and organisation for Term 3. We understand that Tuesdays can be tricky for those that work, however anyone that can come along would be greatly appreciated. We will aim to meet at 9:10am in the old building

I will send out discussions and information to all parents after the catch up. Those that would like to have input however are unable to attend, can email me after this goes out.

Student Free Day this Friday

A reminder that this Friday (21st July) is a student free day for all students. Staff at both the Buninyong and Scotsburn campuses will be undertaking some professional development focussing on wellbeing practices. This day will be extremely valuable for all staff, and we look forward to implementing aspects of our new learning to the campus, ensuring that we are continuing to provide the best possible environment and care for all of our students at Scotsburn.

Scotsburn Breakfast Club - Thursdays

Last week was a great first week back for Breakfast Club. We had a large number of students come in to enjoy some toast, a milo and Gaye’s famous fruit kebabs! For this week, can we please remind all students to pop in as soon as they arrive at school, so that there is not a big rush at 9am and we can start the day as close to bell time as possible.

Wonder White Bread Bag Recycle

The Wonder White bread bag collection is coming to an end. If you have any empty bread bags, we would love for them to be brought to school to be recycled. All bread bags are recycled and turned into amazing plastic products such as fence posts and playground equipment. For every 5kg of plastic recycled, our school gets points to purchase some amazing sports equipment. We will be collecting bags until the end of July.

100 Days of School

Next Thursday 27th July, SC1 will be celebrating 100 days of school. We encourage all SC1 students to dress up, looking as if they are 100 years old or linking number 100 into a dress theme. We would also love students to bring a zip lock bag filled with 100 things. It could be smarties, sequins, 100s and 1000s, paper clips, pom poms, small stones, or leaves. Be creative, it is amazing to discover so many ‘100s’!

Japanese News

Happy Tanabata, everyone! Tanabata festival is celebrated in Japan on the 7th day of the 7th month each year, because it is the only day of the year that two star-crossed lovers, Orihime and Hikoboshi, can cross the Milky Way to see each other. On this day, Japanese people make wishes and hang them on bamboo plants, as well as enjoying special foods, parades and decorations. We explored the links between Tanabata and the use of the Milky Way in Aboriginal dreamtime stories also, and SC1 made these Emu in the stars artworks in response to the dream-time story, Awesome Emu (you can view this story

and listen to an explanation of how the emu in the sky is used in Aboriginal culture

SC1 Learning Snapshot

A big welcome back to everyone. We hope you had a lovely break. This term has started off with another smooth transition back to school and everyone has been ready to get back in the swing of things.

In Reading, we are looking at features of non-fiction books, such as contents page, headings, captions index page, etc, as well as our everyday focus of segmenting and blending. We will then transfer this knowledge to our Writing sessions and create a non-fiction text. Students will have the opportunity to choose a topic of interest.

In Maths, we have been looking at repeated addition, groups of, and arrays. This is in sequential order to understand multiplication, our end learning goal.

Please keep an eye out this Thursday for our termly SC1 newsletter that will be sent home. This will contain lots of information about excursions this term and upcoming events.

If you have any questions, please come in and chat with us.

Thanks.

Ana and Kirsty.

SC2 Learning Snapshot

SC2 has hit the ground running this Term in all areas of the curriculum. Students have commenced their new inquiry unit this week being ‘Someone Else’s Shoes’ and have been discussing what a disadvantage is. Students have already shown a great deal of empathy and understanding as we scratched the surface of this heavy topic.

In Reading, students have been exposed to many non-fiction texts, identifying the important and interesting information from within. This is interrelated to their writing this term as students are researching and immersing themselves into the craft of writing an information report on an animal of their choice.

In Maths, students have been using their previous knowledge of multiplication to transfer their understanding into division.

SC2 also worked hard on creating their own ‘hand-in-hand’ display to celebrate NAIDOC week. Watch out for this display to be on the front windows once fully completed as students used illustrations from multiple texts from their reading during NAIDOC week to inform their designs.

On Monday, Week 4, students will partake in the Grade 2/3/4 Cultural Day down at Buninyong. This will include activities such as making damper, guest speakers and more. Please provide confirmation and permission on compass and see all details provided during the week. Feel free to email through any questions regarding the day.

Have a great week!

Mitch.

SC3 Learning Snapshot

It has been an absolute pleasure to walk back into SC3 after the mid-year break. All students have returned full of energy and enthusiasm to learn new concepts in all areas, with the classroom having a really nice feel. At the end of last term, we farewelled Hailey and Summer, who have moved on to new learning adventures. We wish them all the best and they will both certainly be missed by all!

This term, our inquiry unit is called “Cashing In!”, with us taking a deep dive into business and economics. We have already begun work on our Shark Tank major project, with a great deal of excitement in the air!

On Friday, SC3 joined SC1 to do some buddy reading. SC1 has been working on comparing and contrasting Fiction and Non Fiction texts, and it was wonderful for our SC3 students to help them through this task. Our students love the time spent working with their buddies, and we look forward to incorporating this more throughout the term.

Please keep an eye out on Compass for our upcoming BioCats excursion. The excursion has no cost and will see SC3 travel down to GMHBA stadium in Geelong to look at different areas of STEM, and the link between sport and science. It is always a fun excursion.

Our Termly newsletter will also be distributed this Thursday, both in digital and hard copy format. Please keep this handy as it includes lots of important information and upcoming dates for the term ahead.

As always, please come in and see me if you would like to chat about anything regarding your child’s education.

Have a wonderful week everyone,

Jarrod
