Year 1 Spotlight

Can You Believe It's Term 3 Already?

The Year 1 teachers were happy to welcome back a bunch of cheerful students last Monday. We can’t believe it is term three already!

With so many exciting things already set on the school calendar, let's hear what Year 1A students are looking forward to this term.

Scout: I’m excited for school swimming because I want to learn some new skills.

Harriet: I am looking forward to Art. The Mona Lisa was awesome and now we are learning about balancing materials and plastics from Marjie’s House. And I get to work with my friends!

Max: Kick-to-kick with my friend Billy is going to be great. Getting on to READING EGGS!

Finn B: I’m looking forward to doing Chess at lunchtime because I want to beat my Grandpa.

Most of all, the children all agree that they look forward to learning new things and taking on new challenges everyday.

Writing

Wow, what an amazing time we have all had during the holidays. So we just had to write and share our adventures! We wrote a recount using some of these words – first, next, then, later, finally. We all did some amazing writing!

Some of us went to the movies, had sleepovers, visited family – both here and overseas, went snorkelling, saw waterfalls, went to parties, played games, made tunnels and had great times.

We will be revisiting narratives this term and we are lucky enough to have a real author visit us, Louise Fedele (parent of Evie in 1B). Louise will be sharing with us how you start a story and giving us lots of helpful hints. We are all very excited to have Louise visit the Year 1s.

We will also be learning how to write letters. This is called transactional writing. So look forward to lots of letters. Then towards the end of term we will be writing poetry.

We have such a busy term ahead!

Problem Solving in Maths

Last Tuesday, 1C were lucky to have a special visitor (Jane Hubbard, from the Mathematics Association of Victoria) run a problem solving maths session. Students were posed with the question, How many feet are in the room right now? After some thinking time, 1C realised this was quite a tricky problem to solve! They applied strategies they knew and were encouraged to demonstrate their thinking using mathematical drawings.

It was so wonderful to see the students engaged, collaborating with each other, explaining their thinking, trialling different approaches and learning from their peers.

Edith: It was awesome because we worked hard and then finally worked out the answer together. Even though I didn’t get the right answer, it was still really fun.

Maggie: I liked it because I learnt how to do a maths drawing and even though it was hard I still had fun.

Lawson: I had to try multiple times to work out the answer.
