Our work and play both in and out of the school

Sporting updates

The grade 5's have been involved in another sports day this week as the Winter Round Robin occurred this Wednesday. Everyone in grade 5 had the opportunity to play against other schools in the valley in a range of sports from volleyball, netball and tee-ball. Everyone participated and had a great day out in the rare sunshine. From all reports the children had fun and played well as a team.  Here are some of the highlights from the day.

Well-being workshops and upcoming events

This term our school is offering students some workshops that have been organized by our well-being co-ordinator Mrs. Beveridge. With next year quickly looming and school captain positions being considered in the near future, the grade 5's were given the opportunity to be involved in a leadership workshop.  This was an online course designed to get the students thinking about what leadership looks like and what qualities and skills they might need to become a leader of the school.

On Thursday of this week, the grade 5 girls were offered a social skills workshop that focused on dealing with stress around times of change, looking at thoughts and emotions and understanding things we can control, and how to deal best with things that happen that we cannot control.  We hope the grade 5's enjoyed and made the most of these professionally run workshops.  Below are some snapshots of the session.

Upcoming sessions

On the 8th of August, the grade 4's will be given an opportunity to be involved in a friendship workshop that will be run by Kids helpline professionals.

In addition to this, there will be an opportunity offered to both parents and students around sex education. More information will be given via email or the newsletter.  We hope that these workshops will be of benefit to both students and parents alike.

Save the Date: (14th and 15th September)

Grade 3/ 4 Camp

In the coming weeks, parents of grade 3 and 4 students will be sent an Operoo notice about our upcoming grade 3/ 4 city camp. This camp is a 2 day overnight stay in the Christian Youth Camp at 538 Collins Street, Melbourne.

An exciting 2 days have been planned for the students and teachers alike. The dates for this are the 14th and 15th of September which is the last two days of the school term

Please be aware, that the children will be catching the train to and from the city from Lilydale station. This will involve meeting at Lilydale station on a Thursday morning and the children will need to be picked up from Lilydale station on Friday afternoon.  The exact times will be communicated to you in the near future via Operoo.

As this might be your child's first overnight experience away, in a camp situation please have a conversation with your child about this upcoming experience.  We have had a discussion already at school about this and planning for the camp is well underway. We encourage all students to attend the camp program and from past experience, "camp" has been said by past students "to be the highlight of the year". It is also a fantastic opportunity to get a taste of the city life, as well as build team spirit and resilience.

On another important note- please update any important details on Operoo over the next 2 weeks. It is vital that we know of any dietary, medical or other needs via Operoo well before we go to camp.

As the current camp planner, if you have any questions or queries about the upcoming 3/4 camp please let me, (Paula Durrant) know via email (pdurrant@sjyarrajunction.catholic.edu.au)

We are coming out the other side of winter and hopefully into some more sun-filled and pleasant days.  Thank you to all of you who have kept in touch regarding school absences and missed days due to sickness.  Let's hope that with the warmer weather things settle down and we have fewer children away in the upcoming weeks.

Please don't hesitate to contact both of us if you have any queries or questions regarding your child's progress or social/ emotional concerns.  We are contactable via email at (pdurrant@sjyarrajunction.catholic.edu.au) and (dfahey@sjyarrajunction.catholic.edu.au)

or via the school number (5967 1183).  We will endeavor to get back to you as quickly as possible.

Warm wishes
