Japanese

Kaori Bawden

We have been busy decorating with lanterns and Tanzaku on our bamboo tree in the library. Students were learning about a Start festival called Tanabata this time of the year.

Tanabata is a festival that is celebrated every year on July 7 (or August 7 in some places). When this time of year comes around, people write their wishes on strips of paper and hang them on bamboo trees, along with decorations. You can see this almost everywhere in Japan.

The foundation students started learning about the first Hiragana letter あ. They designed あ with their colourful decoration. They also learned about the story behind Tanabata Festival with puppets.

In week 3, Grades 1 and 2 have made their own passport and getting ready to travel to Japan (virtually). They were getting excited to receive the ticket and passport to make their own travel suitcase this term.

Grades 3, 4, 5, and 6  discovered World Emoji Day which was on the 17th of July. They learned the history of this event and designed St. Joseph's Primary Emoji and Japanese language emoji. They will be voted the best design for St. Joseph's Primary and the Japanese language next week.

That's all from the Japanese class! Have a lovely weekend.
