Creating Futures Together
Students have begun this term looking at the new areas for Science.
Year 7 have been able to explore Biology and classification, looking at animals and their different characteristics, but also undertaking the dissection of fish and squid.
Year 8 have been investigating the different systems within the body such as the Digestive System with the Gums to Bum practical, Heart Dissection for the Circulatory System and blowing up the lungs from the sheep. Student agency has also allowed the students to investigate one of the systems and present it to others in different ways. The creativity from the students has been fantastic.
Year 9 are looking at the Science of Chemistry. They are being exposed to the elements, by investigating a particular element and its characteristics, doing experiments looking at the properties of elements, looking at ions and eventually mixing substances together.
Year 9 Forensic Science has been looking at what it is and are now looking at the evidence of fingerprints. The students have had the opportunity to use experimental techniques, such as Magnetic Dusting, Iodine Fuming and Superglue Fuming to work out the best procedure of getting a good fingerprint of a piece of evidence. Once the fingerprint evidence has been obtained the students are looking at the different characteristics of a fingerprint.
Year 9 Earth Science have been looking at Volcanoes and how they work, creating 3D working models with an explosion from the mouth of their models. They are now looking at weather and climates and then moving to Astronomy.
Year 10 students are now doing the other two areas in Science. Chemistry and Physics or Biology and Psychology. This is to embed basic information in readiness for Year 11 and 12 if they chose that subject in 2024.
Our Year 11 and 12 students have been busy completing course work, practical’s, SAC’s and preparing for exams.
The Science area has been very busy. Investigating, exploring, questioning. Hopefully creating an opportunity for the students to become inquisitive about the world around them!
