READING
SummarisingWeek 3-6

Students will learn to:Recall key events from a text, focussing on recalling the specific order of events, not just the beginning, middle and end.

Verbally recall the main idea of the story using only one sentence. 

Draw a picture of the main idea in a book that they have read.

InferringWeek 7-10

Students will learn to:Identify the main characters and discuss why they have made certain decisions, their likely future actions and their feelings.  

Discuss the illustrations, pictures or paintings in a book without looking at the text and investigate what information these images give us.

WRITING
PoetryWeek 3-7

Students will learn:

The features of and how to write different poetic genres, such as:

  • Cinquain
  • Haiku
  • Limericks
  • Odes

 

A range of language devices and how to use them effectively, including:

  • Puns and spoonerisms
  • Similes
  • Metaphor
  • Hyperbole
  • Personification 
Narrative (Fantasy)Week 8-10

Students will learn about:

The structure and features of Fantasy texts.

 

Students will write an alternative ending to a well known fantasy story, such as:

  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
  • Peter Pan
MATHS
Fractions, Decimals & PercentagesWhole Term

Students will learn to:

  • Model and represent unit fractions including 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 1/5
  • Practise counting by quarters, halves and thirds, including mixed numerals (¼, ½ , ¾, 1, 1¼ …).
  • Investigate decimals in real world situations (money, measurements etc).
  • Roll dice to create fractions, for example ⅛ and ¾, and add together.
TimeWhole Term

Students will learn to: 

  • Make their own clock using a paper plate
  • Convert between 12 and 24 hour time. For example 1730 converts to 5:30pm.
  • Convert between units of time. For example, 150 minutes is equivalent to how many hours? 93 seconds is equivalent to how many minutes.
