BIOLOGY ZOO EXCURSION
Exploring Animal Adaptations and Conservation at the Melbourne Zoo
By Annie Rajulu (Secondary Teacher)
We are excited to share an incredible learning opportunity that our VCE Biology Unit 2 students recently experienced at the Melbourne Zoo. The "Adaptations for Survival" program allowed our students to delve into the fascinating world of animal adaptations and conservation, using real-world examples to gain a deeper understanding of the delicate balance that exists within ecosystems.
One of the key highlights of the program was the study of the Southern Corroboree Frog (Pseudophryne corroboree), a critically endangered species native to the Australian Alps. Through this exploration, our students discovered the structural, physiological, and behavioural adaptations that have enabled this unique species to survive in its challenging environment. As part of the program, our students delved into the bioethical considerations involved in captive breeding programs aimed at preserving and safeguarding this precious species.
In addition to studying the Southern Corroboree Frog, our students had the opportunity to use their science inquiry skills to collect and analyse data related to the behaviours of butterflies in the Melbourne Zoo Butterfly House. This hands-on experience provided a practical application of their scientific knowledge and allowed them to observe the interdependencies of species within an ecosystem.
The zoo visit was enriched by an engaging Zoo Teacher Workshop and informative Keeper talks, where our students had the chance to interact with experts and deepen their understanding of animal behaviour and conservation efforts.
In conclusion, the "Adaptations for Survival" program at the Melbourne Zoo was an enriching and eye-opening experience for our VCE Biology Unit 2 students. They not only learned about the remarkable adaptations of the Southern Corroboree Frog but also gained a greater appreciation for the delicate balance of life within ecosystems and the importance of conservation efforts.
