2017 Secondary School Production Seussical Jr!

Rehearsals for the 2017 Moama Anglican Grammar Secondary School Production are in full swing. This year students will be performing the musical Seussical Jr, based around some of Dr Seuss’s famous books. The story follows Horton the Elephant and Jojo the Who, as they try to find their way in their own worlds. Of course, you can’t have Dr Seuss without the Cat in the Hat, who is the narrator of this story.

Students from Years 7 – 12 have been rehearsing since Term One and the cast of thirty have been utilising rehearsal time at lunch and after school to put the show together. Mrs Martina Richardson, the Musical Director for this production, has been working tirelessly with the whole cast to help them learn their music, songs and harmonies. Not only has Mrs Richardson been working with the whole ensemble at least three times a week, she has also spent time working with the leads and small groups individually to support them in preparation for their solos.

Thankfully, for me as the Director, a team of students have kindly volunteered their time to help with the choreography. This has assisted in giving the show even more life and excitement. I would like to take this time to mention Zahli Calder, Madeline Kuluris, Rachel Kerr, Maddison Dowell, Maddilyn Watson, Sarah McMahon and Alex Dwyer for taking time out of their busy schedules to assist with this aspect of the show. Thank you so much girls!

Mrs Kim McFadden, our backstage guru, with the assistance of the backstage crew, is already working to create elements of the show. Her help with the coordination of this feature, has meant that we are well on the way to having props and costumes being made, sewn and put together. Because the musical is based on Dr Seuss, the production is going to be bright and colourful and this will certainly be reflected on stage. To assist with the energy of the show, Mr Danny Hindson has been designing our AV backdrops adding even more colour and ‘Seuss’ style to the visual effects.

Having such a dedicated and committed group of students has ensured a relaxed and really enjoyable development process. Through their work and the support of the casts, parents and guardians, we have been able to do a full run of the entire show, eleven weeks out from the performances. It was so exciting and allowed the cast members to see it all put together and to appreciate their own hard work. I am very proud of all those involved in this fantastic show, and I feel very fortunate to have the calibre of our amazing cast.

Seussical Jr will be performed at the Echuca Paramount Theatre on Thursday 3 August and Friday 4 August. Please keep an eye on the school newsletter for ticket information.

We are all very excited about bringing this show to Moama Anglican Grammar and our surrounding communities.
