Assistant Principal News

Welcome back to all as we move into Term 3!

Last Monday, while students enjoyed their final day of holidays, the staff participated in an important and successful Staff Professional Learning Day.

This Professional Learning was the second in a series of our ‘Learning Collaborative’ Sessions focusing on improving teacher practice and student engagement through data. This initiative, common across all Schools in the CED Wagga Wagga is based on the research and practice of educational expert Lyn Sharratt.

In the first half of the day, staff engaged with key learning questions, aimed at explicitly targeting learning goals, methods and solutions. We are currently building capacity so that these questions will soon become common language throughout our College. We want all students, staff and parents to feel comfortable and confident in asking and answering these questions. I have replicated the questions below. I encourage all parents to begin to have learning conversations with their children.

In the second half of the day, staff worked collaboratively to analyse, interpret and discuss Year 8 student data. Teachers worked in small learning teams to match student data to ‘faces’, identify patterns and trends and suggest interventions and solutions for individual students. The result has been a Collaborative document for teachers to begin to build a picture of each student’s personalised learning needs. This is a positive step forward in continuing to individually cater learning for all students.

We also want to wish Year 12 all the best for their Trial Exams next week. Students will sit their exams not only as practise for their HSC, but also as their final HSC Assessment Task for their subjects.

I encourage all students to prioritise their attention on these exams  over the next few weeks, and study effectively in order to feel confident and prepared moving into each exam.

Year 12 students will return to class on Tuesday 20th August.

Today we held our Junior Awards Ceremonies for Semester 1. It was pleasing to see so many parents in attendance, along with so many bright happy faces of students accepting their awards. I encourage all students to continue to strive for improvement in Semester 2.

Finally, I would like to finish by reminding students and parents that we have a new roll marking computer system this term. With ‘Compass’, our new system, it is of vital importance that students have their name marked in all classes and that they sign in and out through the office if they arrive late or leave early. By doing this, students will prevent unexplained absences being generated for their record.

Enjoy the rest of Term 3

Yours in learning,
