ABCN (Australian Business and Community Network) Aspirations
On 26 th April, 23-selected year 11 students attended the launch of the Aspirations program for 2018 held in the Information Commons. The program is designed to familiarise high school students with a modern workplace and equip them with the skills to get there. The launch included a welcome from the ABCN co-ordinator and Ms Miller. Students and mentors from Fuji Xerox, then participated in some icebreaker activities followed by a school tour and morning tea. The next 4 sessions will be at Fuji Xerox in St Kilda Road, where the students will have the opportunity to work closely with their mentors.
ABCN Focus
On May 14 th, eight selected year 11 girls attended a Women n Leadership conference at CGU Insurance
along with ten girls from Lalor Secondary College. The session began with some getting to know you games where students in table groups each selected a card from an Icebreaker set with questions on. Students then had to go round the room and pair up and talk about a women leader who they admired and why they admired them. On completion, the girls sat in table groups and went through qualities of a good leader. Half way through the session, mentors from GGU Insurance arrived and worked with the girls over a light. Mentors shared their stories on their pathways and ways to develop skills to become a good leader.
Deakin University Visit
On May 9 th , interested Year 12 students went to Deakin University Campus. On arrival the students
were met by student ambassadors where they were taken to a tutorial room and had the
opportunity to listen to a speaker about the University, including: Courses offered, University Life,
Clubs, Study abroad opportunities, Commonwealth supported places and HECS fees. The session was
interactive where students had plenty of opportunities to ask questions and to speak to the student
ambassadors. A tour of the University followed, where students had the opportunity to see a range of facilities – including the Nursing faculty, which included a hospital ward, a simulated primary school classroom, the business faculty, IT, drama rooms, student centre and library. Students then had an hour to explore the University on their own, some chose to look no further than the café as they were exhausted from walking around the site.
Year 12 Valedictory- October 24th
The planning committee continue to meet fortnightly on a Tuesday. The theme for the Valedictory
breakfast is decided. ‘Throwback Wednesday’. Students are encouraged to dress up in outfits from
their early childhood years. The decorations for the performing arts centre and the events for the
assembly are the next agenda items.
Senior Formal – Year 10, 11 and 12
The senior formal open to all students in year 10, 11 and 12 this year is on the 30 th August at the
Sandhurst Club from 7.00pm to 11.30 pm. Cost of tickets is $45.00 per head. Tickets go on sale at the
start of term 3.
Access Monash
Regularly around the College, you see the ACCESS MONASH mentors catching up with their year 11
and 12 mentees. There have been many conversations on a broad range of topics such as study
skills, pathway planning, and university life. Some of our students have already had the opportunity
to shadow their mentor at University for a day.
Exams
A reminder that Exam week for Year 10, 11 and 12 students is the 4 th – 8 th June. The GAT (General Achievement Test) on the 13 th June is for all students undertaking a Unit 3/4 study. All students have been given a copy of the exam timetable along with expectations, GAT brochures and a briefing about exams and the GAT will occur within the next 2 weeks.
Practice Exams for unit 3 4 studies
There will be three opportunities after school for students to complete practice exams under timed
conditions. These will occur on the 28 th , 30 th and 31 st May, 3.15 – 5pm. All students are encouraged to take up the opportunity as learning how to complete exams in a given time takes time to develop.
Y11 Biology Immersion Day
The year 11 Biology class completed an excursion at GTAC (Melbourne University) to explore cells and microscopes. The program started with an overview of cell. In a laboratory students used compound light microscopes and staining methods to prepare a range of cell types to explore cell structures and the functions of key organelles. They examine their slides by light microscopy at up to a magnification of 1000x and record their observations with labelled scientific drawings, and digital images. The students had the opportunity to use real scientific equipment and complete tasks in a real laboratory. This experiment provides a unique and aesthetic insight into the architecture of eukaryotic cells and an experience of an advanced technique used by scientists to study cell function. The year 11s worked well and the workshop provided them with a detailed understanding of scientific techniques.
Pride Squad
Meetings occur fortnightly on Tuesday’s in the Closet (Pride Room). Students have been planning for
IDAHOBIT day celebrations on the 17 th May along with completing the Monsters Inc. design for the
closet door. Six of the members on the 10 th May accompanied by Mrs Jenni Holt went to Elizabeth Murdoch College where they held a combined meeting along with lunch, with members of EMC Equality
Alliance Group. This provided an opportunity to share ideas for IDAHOBIT day and to network.
On May 3 rd Mrs Andrews, Mrs Ward and one member of the Pride Squad went to Mornington to
attend the Frankston Mornington Peninsula Network Groups term meeting. The meeting provided
opportunities from local schools, education department representative and organisations such as
Peninsula Pride, Peninsula Health and Rainbow Network to share ideas and plans for IDAHOBIT day
and other events and support available for LGBTQI+ student
