Music - Queensland Catholic School and Colleges Music Festival

On Thursday 15 August, 25 students left McCarthy bound for the Queensland Catholic School and Colleges Music Festival at Brisbane. These 25 students created four ensembles, the Brass Ensemble, the Saxophone Ensemble, the Jazz Band and the Concert Band.

The festival is a celebration of the wonderful music occurring within Catholic Schools and Colleges, and while it is based in Queensland, they have performers from all over Australia and New Zealand. The music during the festival covered a wide variety of styles and ensembles, including Concert Bands, Rock Bands, Drum Lines and Choirs. Over the four days of the festival, students from 115 schools, equalling 15,000 students in over 500 music ensembles performed at the festival.

An extraordinary experience and a fun celebration of music for our students.

The festival is not a competition against the other performers, rather each section is judged against set criteria. Our students represented the College well, receiving the following awards:

* The Saxophone Ensemble received a Silver Award;

*  The Brass Ensemble received a Gold Award;

* The Jazz Band received a Silver Award;  and

* The Concert band received a Gold Award.

It was also a wonderful opportunity for our students to listen to all of the other performances at the festival. Congratulations to all of our students for their great performances and dedication to the College bands.

This year, two of our Year 12 music students have been involved in the New South Wales Regional Youth Orchestra. Ryan Thompson has been the principle Trombonist, and Augustine Mundele-Turner was the Concert Master. As members of this orchestra they have had numerous opportunities to travel, practise and perform around NSW, gaining experience and expertise from experienced musicians.
