Including Connor Guest of Year 7, Connor is a talented player and is quickly rising in his rankings in NSW.  Connor won the North- West Champion of Champions in the Under 12 Division recently. Connor also played in the July holidays in the NSW Country Championships where he and his partner, Seamus Sheperd, won the Under 12 Mixed Doubles, he also made the semi finals in the 12 Years Singles, Under 12  Doubles, and semi finals in the Under 13 years. Champion of Champions Oztag- Sydney

On Monday 12 August, the Year 7/8 Girls and Year 9/10 Girls travelled to Sydney with Miss Woolaston and Mrs Laird to compete in the NSW State Secondary Schools Oztag  titles in Penrith. The girls who were North-West Champions now had the opportunity to challenge the winners from other regions across the State.

The standard of competition seems to improve every year as more students are playing the game at school level as well as clubs outside school. This was the first year that the competition has been run over two days.

The Year 7 and 8 Girls consisted of a talented group of players. Starting a little nervously, as they still had not played a lot together, but with every game they improved and there was some very close matches. The girls were very competitive, although they didn't make the quarter finals. The Year 7 and 8 girls played against Beverly Hills High School, Warilla High School, Castle Hill High School and St Clare High School.  Grace Shanley, Monique Corbett, Lauren Daye, Claudia Cartan, Tarnee Ingram, Erin Hansen, Keira Kerr, Jayda Constable, Georgia Sheppard, Tomi Gavin, Annalise Tighe, Wunda Jaffer-Williams.

The Year 9 and 10 Girls Georgia Horniman, Phoebe Porter, Macy Gillies, Holly Bynge, Chloe Shanley, Georgia Simm, Tyanna Kerr, Sienna O'Mally, Skyler Dowden, Mackenzie Alderson, Georgia Goodwin were attempting to defend their title from last year and despite missing a couple of key players, they had a very talented team. On the first day the girls played Matraville Sports High School, Caroline Chisholm and Erina High School (runners up from last year). The girls won 2 out of 3 games, playing strongly their speed, fitness and skill levels were great. On the second day, a win saw the girls advance to the quarter final. In a closely fought game the girls went down 3-0 to bow out of the competition. All students gave it their all, playing to the spirit of the game and showing outstanding sportsmanship. Phoebe Porter as a result of her outstanding play was selected in the Year 9/10 NSW merit team. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement Phoebe.

The conduct of the girls was exemplary and they represented the College with pride at all times. A big thank you to Mrs Tanya Laird and Miss Woolaston for taking the girls down and coaching them. It was a great trip thoroughly enjoyed by all with plenty of McCarthy spirit shown. Thank you to the parents who came down and supported the girls. To Mr and Mrs Ingram, Mrs Kerr and Karen Shepherd  thank you for all the encouragement and cheering you did for our girls. We look forward to returning again next year.

NSW CCC Hockey Report 2019

Junior Girls

The McCarthy junior girls’ team won their division of the NSW CCC Hockey Championships, defending their title. In a tough first game, against Mackillop College, Port Macquarie, a great deflection goal from Marley Pitt gave McCarthy a 1-0 win. The following two pool games resulted in convincing wins as McCarthy qualified for the semi-finals, finishing top of their pool.

McCarthy started strongly in their semi-final against Monte Saint’ Angelo Mercy College, North Sydney, quickly establishing a comfortable lead before running out 8-0 winners, with Abby Wakely scoring 4 goals. The final saw McCarthy again come up against Port Macquarie’s Mackillop College, after they beat Bathurst 2-1 in their semi-final. The final was a very tight contest with McCarthy having the better of the chances, but neither side was able to break the 0-0 deadlock. With two minutes to go in the second half and extra time and a possible shootout looming, Ashlee Kampe was able to score the decisive goal to deliver McCarthy a 1-0 victory.

The tournament win was a wonderful team effort, with 10 different goal scorers and no goals being conceded by McCarthy throughout. A special mention to our goalkeeper, Erin Allan, who did a great job despite only taking up hockey a few months ago at my request.

Team: Erin Allan, Ella Constable, Ellie Highlands, Ashlee Kampe, Callie Michell, Ella Mitchell, Ruby Pascoe, Marley Pitt, Claudia Rodda, Grace Salkeld, Mackenzie Scott, Georgia Simm and Abby Wakely.

Open Girls

The Open Girls team met 2018 winners and eventual 2019 finalists Mount St. Patrick's (Murwullimbah) in their first game. Despite a strong performance from all the girls, MCC were defeated 5-1.

In the remaining 3 games MCC defeated Newman Senior Tech (Port Macquarie) 6-0, St Scholastica's (Glebe) 7-0 and MacKillop College (Bathurst) also 7-0.

This meant that MCC ran 2nd in their pool. Unfortunately this was not enough to secure a semi-final berth as only the top place in each of the 4 pools progressed.

All the girls contributed strongly to a great team performance in the 4 games with Amber Witney, Lucy Frame, Ashleigh and Georgia Horniman, and Anneleise Frear always a danger to the opposing teams. Millah Green and Holly Littlejohns were very strong in defence allowing very few shots on goal.

All the girls played with a great team spirit and outstanding sportsmanship.

Open Boys

The McCarthy Open Boys’ team also had a successful carnival. A first up win over Mount St Patrick’s College, Murwillumbah was followed by a comfortable win over St Edward's College, Gosford. In their last game of day one McCarthy drew with a very strong team from Red Bend Catholic College, Forbes. On the second day McCarthy had a big win over St Joseph's High School, Aberdeen, before a tighter game saw them defeat Trinity Catholic College, Goulburn.

At the end of the pool games McCarthy finished equal first with Red Bend with four wins and one draw. Unfortunately only one team from each pool progressed to the final and Red Bend advanced due to a superior goal difference.

The McCarthy open boys played outstanding hockey over the 2 days, with all players contributing. The team was made up of an even spread of players from year 7 to 12, many of whom came up against significantly older and bigger opposition.
