Vale Michael Sage  

(SVC 1960-64)  

Michael Sage attended St Virgil’s as a boarder from Queenstown 1960 – 1964).  He was a larger than life character who loved his football and cricket.

 

Post school he returned to the West Coast, where he played football with teams from Queenstown and Rosebery, and also cricket with the latter. From there he moved to the North West Coast to play with the now defunct South Riana. Michael also coached at Sprent when they were affiliated with the Leven Association, but is better known for his connection with cricket, as a player with Penguin and his 16 year involvement as both President of the NWTCA and Board member of the TCA. Michael joined the Two Blues (Penguin) as a trainer from 1976 to 1978 and was club Secretary in 1979 and 1980.

He was awarded Cricket North West Life Membership in 2005.

 

Michael ran a successful used cars business at Cooee for many years and was an extremely well-known identity of the coast.

 

The following tribute from Cricket Tasmania appeared in the Mercury on Tuesday November 30.

 

Mike was a member of the Cricket Tasmania Board and at the same time President of Cricket North West between 1989 and 2004. He was a larger than life character who always bought an enthusiastic attitude to everything he did. Mike was a tireless advocate for cricket on the North West Coast, whilst at the same time understanding the importance of ensuring Tasmanian cricket was strong as a whole. His contribution to Tasmanian cricket will always be remembered. Cricket Tasmania extends its condolences to Gaye, Kylie, Grant and all of Mike’s extended family.

As retirees, Michael and his wife, Gaye, moved to Bribie Island in Queensland in 2005 where he died suddenly on November 24.
