Student Free Day Postponed

Each year our staff use one of our student free days early in Term 1 to conduct a two-day conference that provides professional learning and opportunities for team building. While we know that having a student free day early in the year is a disruption, we know that the benefit for staff (and therefore students’ learning) significantly outweighs the disruption. Our staff conferences for the past two years have been impacted by COVID and the current case numbers have left us feeling that a conference in Term 1 will not be worth the disruption to student learning.

Therefore we are postponing the student free day that was scheduled for Friday 18th February to another day in Term 2, yet to be approved by our School Council. We will inform you of the new date once it has been confirmed. Students will be expected to attend school on Friday 18th February as usual.

Grade 5/6 Camp Postponed

Tom Nelson, our much-loved PE teacher managed to book a 5-6 camp to Canberra at the end of this term. Under usual circumstances, this is an ideal time for our eldest students to explore the possibilities of their senior year/s at primary school, but we all know that we are not living under usual circumstances!

From Term 4 last year, we know that family opinions about a camp during this pandemic are varied. Some families reported that they were happy to have gone on a camp, even if their child contracted COVID. While other families felt very differently. As camps are an optional extra-curricular activity, we were happy to continue planning for a camp with additional COVID safety measures, if we had enough staff willing to volunteer their time (yes, camps are voluntary for staff - we do it for the love!).

After consultation between Tom, Keir and Hannah, we have decided that the distance of the camp, together with the current operational guidelines for schools, means we are unable to provide this experience at the planned time. We know that the guidelines will likely change after the first four weeks, but the requirements for planning and payments makes this too stressful for families and staff.

We are sorry to disappoint some families with this news, but we would like to assure everyone that Tom is investigating other options for later in the year.
