Healthy Schools Banyule
Hello everyone, wow we are finally out of lockdown and back at school and before we know it Christmas is here!
Coming out of lockdown 5 was so exciting to see and reconnect with students and colleagues. Now that we are moving around a lot more, attending school, work and social occasions, it is important to stay as well as possible by improving your health habits, overall wellness and keep active. This will help you embrace the festive season with family and friends. And the best gift you can give this Christmas is to be double vaccinated and get tested if feeling unwell.
Here at Healthy Schools Banyule we have been busy planning for our Fresh Start Monday family nutrition program to get underway. After a few delayed starts, we are taking the cooking sessions online. Covid-19 has meant we need to be flexible in the way we work. Even though this has been challenging at times, it has allowed room to be creative in the way we support and deliver our health messages. The pilot program is targeted at '3081' but by taking it online we will have a resource to share with everyone. Win - Win!
Recently attending Olympic Village Primary School’s grade 6 graduation celebration is a timely reminder of just how far we have all come. As we wind up the year it is important to think about our, and our students, health and wellbeing. What has been your impact throughout the year? What have you done to nurture your / their true potential? Acknowledge the things you need to work on, as well as the successes and celebrations. Have a restful and enjoyable break.

Banyule Youth Services
After a long year we are so excited that communities are able to reconnect before the end of 2021. We are sure everyone is busy running around wrapping the term up, however wanted to highlight some additional events happening over the summer break.
As most of you are aware Banyule Youth Services provides support to young people, families/carers and schools living, working, studying or socialising in the Banyule Municipality. Our service prides itself of being strengths-based, holistic support that is driven by the young people themselves to foster empowerment and independent living skills. Banyule Youth Services offer support for young people in the following contexts; one-to-one support, group social/interest based programs and school workshops.
Throughout the year we have shared and observed the level of screen fatigue across students, families and staff. Whilst we worked together to provide virtual responses we are more excited than ever to return to delivering face to face events, workshops and support. This newsletter will focus on our upcoming summer series, opportunities for young people to get involved and sessions that support students transitioning out of secondary school.
Summer Series
BYS is excited to be hosting a large and diverse array of events running over December to January. Our workshops are either free or low cost and include – however are not limited to – movie nights, DIY Macramé and dream catchers, Somali Tea & Chat, First Nations cultural experiences, Minecraft, LGBTQI+ workshops, sporting events and so much more!
These activities provide a safe and fun environment for local youth to connect with others whilst trying something new!

Venues are listed in this link: https://banyuleyouth.com/jumper
If you would like your school to be a collection point for your students, we can arrange to deliver and later collect a box from you.
People who donate their jumper by December 10 can enter a draw to be in the running for 1 of 5 enviro packs valued at over $100. Packs include a Keep Cup, reusable cutlery set, Bento snack box, stainless steel straw kit, reusable make up removers and more.

2021 Banyule Youth Survey
BYS are grateful for the amount of responses young people have offered to contribute to our 2021 youth survey, However there is still time to get involved and ensure young peoples voices are heard and that their changing needs are recognized.
Thus far we have observed the most common issue being face by young people are Mental health, School, Racism, Body Image and Gender Equality. Alongside this we have noted that young people are seeking a combination of advocacy from services and community groups, and opportunities where they can advocate for themselves.BYS want to continue to support young people in these areas, and provide workshops, events and opportunities that are meaningful and accessible to all.
If you could please share this 2 minute survey with your students it would be greatly appreciated. Additionally, they all go into the draw to win amazing monthly prizes!

Art Vibes Workshop
A great way to explore mindfulness through creative art. Have fun playing art games that explore how art can be used to help you be in the moment. Leza supports participants to tune into their senses, to be mindfully present, and to enjoy the process of creating and experimenting with art. Art vibes does not require any previous art experience, just a willingness to have a go and join the fun.
Music Vibes Workshop
What is music to you and how do you use it? Join Simon as he facilitates the group to explore their favourite tunes. Connect with others through sharing the joy of music. Our Music Vibes and Art Vibes workshops are facilitated by industry creatives who support young people to explore ideas, creative skills and positive thoughts about themselves. Mindfulness plays a huge role in this. The sessions are facilitated for up to one hour and are best facilitated in small groups (8-10). Both workshops are designed and delivered to community and school groups in the Banyule area.
We also have youth groups that young people can be a part of!INCART (Mondays 4-7pm)

INCART facilitators assist young people to engage in a workshop environment that is fun, interactive and inclusive, that encourages young people to be themselves, assisting young people to draw on their own skills and talents to explore the arts and build confidence in their skills and abilities while meeting others.

Every week Australian Red Cross Lifeblood needs to collect 33,000 donations to be able to support those in need.
These donations are used to support patients through their cancer treatments or a difficult pregnancy, during surgery or in an emergency. Others have medical conditions which mean they need blood products regularly to stay healthy.
