Junior School update

Year 3 Poetry

During their Poetry unit, students in Year 3 thoroughly enjoyed learning about various types of poems. They particularly enjoyed our lesson on Acrostic Poems, in which they made a ‘Namebow.’ For each letter of their name they thought of a phrase or a word that described them as a person, and presented this in a rainbow. Students used their creativity to add their individual ideas to their designs, so they are all unique and look wonderful!

Arts Projection Night

Thank you to everyone who attended the Arts Projection Night. It was a lovely night to celebrate the creative talents of all our students via the projection show and also showcase our VCE Studio Art and VCE Visual Communication Folio works by our Year 11 and 12 students. It was great to see our Shelford community to come together to eat, drink, shop and enjoy art! Thank you to the Year 5 and 6 students who helped make the porcelain brooches.

Disability Awareness in Year 5 and 6

Last Thursday, our Year 5 and 6 students participated in the Glen Eira City Council’s Disability Awareness in Schools Program. This program employs people with disabilities to discuss their experiences with primary and secondary school students. We were fortunate to have Anat and Tamara come to speak about the challenges they face and share ways we can be more inclusive of people with disabilities. Students also worked in groups to think of inclusive features they would include if they were planning an event, such as a fete, at Shelford. Below are some student reflections:

We learnt how apps can help the people with special needs, and that we should treat others with different needs to us with respect and kindness. – Jocelyn J

Directed Drawing Club

It’s been a wonderful start to a new term of Directed Drawing, with 7 more passionate and enthusiastic artists joining the after school club on Monday. Mickey and Minnie Mouse were a big hit with our Disney fans and the girls were overwhelmed with how accurate their drawings of these famous mice were! Alice, Sarah and Anna share their favourite drawings so far.

Cooking Club

Every Monday at 3.30pm, the fun begins for a group of girls from Year 5 to 6. They partake in a club setup to teach new and useful cooking skills. Firstly, they prepare themselves by tying up their hair, washing their hands, and putting on their aprons. Next, the talented pastry chef, Chef Henry, with the help of Chef Adlard and Chef Warner, explains the technique and skills required to make a different and exciting recipe each week. Cooking club takes place in the Food Tech room, where we have a wide range of appliances that we have learned to use over a period of time. Cooking is not just about the end product, we also learn to clean up our stations. We are motivated by a special award named after the cleanest teacher/cook in Shelford, the marvellous Mrs Thibou. Families have really enjoyed being able to experience their talented daughters' diverse cooking from around the world.

Chinese Clubs

The afterschool Chinese club is not just about Chinese. Each Monday afternoon the Chinese background learners gather to enjoy learning Chinese idioms through a very funny Cartoon Show 'Mr Unlucky', we learn in laughter and hope Mr Unlucky can get a bit luck one day! We also play thrilling board games and card games to review Chinese characters we learned, so we won’t forget them. We even had chance to make beautiful flowers out of paper.

On Tuesday afternoon we welcome the non-Chinese background girls with catchy Chinese nursery rhymes, we love these rhymes, sometimes we even start singing while we are heading to the Chinese classroom. It is such a great pleasure that we have our class pet Mrs Bunny or Mr Doggy (plush toys) to guide us through fun drama games to practice our speaking in Chinese. We love craft time as well: last week we had great fun in making crazy monsters to practice the Chinese vocabulary of body parts.
