Service Learning: Donations, donations, donations

Community Care Appeal

Two weeks ago, on a very chilly Tuesday morning, I walked into the school grounds with a bag filled with donations. I was greeted with the most spectacular view, a table already filled with rice, pasta, sauces, juices and all kinds of wonderful personal care products. And the donations just kept coming! Your donations are currently being sorted and boxed up, ready to make their way to Compass Community Care. We look forward to hearing from Kym, CEO at Compass in the coming weeks as she hopes to share stories of the impact your donations have on their clients.

Collection fun facts

These are just some of the tallied items collected throughout the appeal:

  • 374 juice boxes
  • 142 toothbrushes
  • 70kg of rice
  • 44 cans of baked beans
  • 196 rolls of toilet paper

Australian Books for Children of Africa

As part of the Year 9 Environment Challenge, some Shelford students are volunteering at ABCA (Australian Books for Children of Africa) in late November. To support this local charity, situated in Caulfield South, we would appreciate any pre-loved books to donate.

  • Books suitable for children between the ages of 2 and 15 years old.
  • Good quality books, both fiction and nonfiction, other than history books.
  • New and pre-loved, including story books, dictionaries and atlases.
  • Only books written in English.
  • No books with weak spines and/or scribbles, please.

To find out more about the wonderful work ABCA is doing please visit their website.

Please bring any books to the IRC and we will ensure they are packed by our Year 9s. The School will be able to track where the books end up.

Flood relief

The impact of the very recent floods has been felt deeply by communities around us. Until you see it with your own eyes, it really is hard to believe how badly people have been impacted. If your family would like to assist, Facebook page ‘Flood Warriors’ is a great place to start. Sikh Volunteers Australia are also in need of support as they continue to provide freshly cooked vegetarian meals throughout Victorian flood affected areas. You can find up to date information on their Facebook page or via their website.
