Pollen Season - Asthma and Hay fever

As we come into the warmer weather, we need to be aware of how storms and grass pollen season can affect our health.  Asthma and hay fever have become familiar with so many of us during this time. A mix of pollens and weather conditions that can see a large number of people suffering from hay fever and /or asthma symptoms over the October to December period.

If your child does suffer from either of these conditions, please let us know so we can help support them effectively at school. At Brighton Primary School our staff are trained in first aid and asthma management.

How you can protect your child during pollen season:

  • See your doctor about your child’s hay fever and/ or asthma and ask them for a treatment plan to ensure they are managing their symptoms in the most effective way.
  • Provide a copy of the treatment plan to the school nurse
  • Provide medication which will be required for your child at school
  • If your child has asthma, provide a spacer for their use at school as it is more effective than using a puffer alone.
  • If your child is prescribed a preventative medication by your GP, make sure they take it as directed and watch them to make sure they are doing this effectively.

Asthma and hay fever (allergic rhinitis) plans for school can be found at the links below:

Remain vigilant for COVID-19

It is important for students to manage any hay fever or asthma symptoms, as these conditions can produce symptoms  which are similar to COVID-19 symptoms.

If your child experiences these symptoms in different ways to their usual hay fever or asthma symptoms, medical advice should be sought. It is also strongly recommended that they test for COVID-19 and report any positive results to the school nurse.

Your child's asthma reliever medication will be stored in your child's classroom, however antihistamines will remain in the health centre and be given according to your child's action plan. We will contact you if your child becomes unwell and requires medication.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns.
