Middle Unit -2/3

How fast has this term been going, week 7 already! The Year 2/3 cohorts continue to be super busy with their learning this term.

In Reading, we have been looking at summarising our reading books, ensuring that we are recording the important details. The students have continued to use the SWBST (Somebody, Wanted, But So, Then) method to ensure that they record all the important details of what happened in the story and who the main characters are. When summarising non-fiction, they are looking for the important information not just the interesting information. The students have also been looking at persuasive texts and trying to find the different language and techniques that writers use to hook and persuade their reader to agree with them.

In Writing, the students have been working on their persuasive writing, trying to persuade their reader to see their point of view. The students have brain- stormed a variety of different topics, that they are passionate about or things that they want to change. Using the chicken foot method to plan helps the students to ensure they have their point of view on the topic and the three reasons/arguments that they are going to use for their paragraphs to convince their reader.

When writing the students have experimented with using the TEEL method (Topic, Evidence, Explain, Link) to ensure that they are explaining their reasons with evidence and an example. We have read some wonderful pieces on a range of different topics ranging from Fungi to Why lunchtime should be longer.

In Maths, we have been looking at angles, place value, symmetry and a range of different problem solving techniques that can help the students solve math problems. The students have also loved using their skills to try to solve the below questions.

In spelling we have continued to look at the oy, oi as in boy eer, ear as in deer, ch, tch as in chicken, fetch, catch, lunch, crunch and sh, ch, ti, ci as in shell, cash, chef, machine, magician, special.

For something different, the students have put their creative hats on and created their own version of ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ and ‘Jingle Bells’ using their spelling words.

The students continue to monitor their herbs and are very excited now as they have had some major growth in the last week. This has led to many conversations about why some plants are growing better than others, and what they can they do to encourage growth for the ones that are slower to grow.

Just a quick reminder we go on our excursion to the Werribee Zoo in 2 weeks on the 5th of December. The close off date for permission forms and money is tomorrow the 18th of November 2022.
