Student Wellbeing

Our  SWPBS focus:

Our SWPBS focus beginning next week (Week 8) is Be Safe, Respect People's Space

This focus continues to place an emphasis on ensuring students are interacting with one another in a safe and respectful manner, especially when on the yard.

Personal space is the area around us that (at that given time) is our own. It varies in distance depending on who is around us eg we allow family to be closer to us then strangers.

Our own personal space is important because:

- It helps us feel safe

- It helps us feel comfortable

- It helps us feel respected

Maintaining personal space around others shows:

- We're respectful

- We're considerate

- We're caring

When we invade someone's personal space we:

- May frighten them

- May cause them to feel uncomfortable

- May intimidate them

- May cause them to become upset

- May cause them to become angry

- May cause them to lash out

If someone invades your personal space you should:

- Move away slightly and regain your personal space

- Gently tell them you require more space

- Remove yourself from the area if you need to

- Stay calm and tell a teacher what's happening if required

The second part of our focus is to really emphasise to our students the importance of early intervention. Please explain to your child that if they're having any issues on the yard or see inappropriate behaviours they're best to seek the support of a teacher rather than ignoring things or intervening themselves. Early good choices deescalate situations and prevent them from escalating to an unsafe point.

Dogs Connect:

Did you know?

Research shows wellbeing dogs can reduce stress in physiological ways by reducing the stress chemical cortisol in the brain and triggering the release of oxytocin, which plays a positive role in social bonding.

The presence of a wellbeing dog in a school setting has also been linked to improvements in school attendance, student confidence levels and increased motivation to participate in learning activities.

Plus dogs in general make us feel happy!
