Koonung Day

Koonung Day - Friday 13 September

Koonung Secondary College has a fantastic community of students, staff and parents and this year’s Koonung Day allowed us all to take a breath and celebrate the success and sense of pride our community has enjoyed over the past 12 months. Back to a full day, KD19 introduced a brand new focus on student agency and choice with events organised by students, staff and parents running throughout periods three to nine. Students were invited to spend the day doing what they love whether that be sport, performing arts, eSports, technology or fine arts. With the main stage full to bursting with amazing musical talent all day, students set up picnic blankets on the oval and soaked up the sun, spending time together outside of the normal hustle and bustle of regular classes.

Year 11 Business Management students set up stalls selling food to much success while the PFA ran sideshow alley games of strength and skill. Staff also took the opportunity to spend time with the students, whether running events or supervising.  Koonung Day gave us all a chance to slow down and appreciate the wonderful relationship our teachers and students have.

I can’t thank the Koonung community enough for their support with the massive undertaking that was KD19. Sam Prosenak, Richard Leask and myself had a vision for a Koonung Day with a festival feel that focused on relationships, community and choice, and because of the support of staff members, student leadership and the PFA, the day was all that and more. As Sharon Paspa’s amazing zoomba routine kicked off and hundreds of students danced, smiled and laughed on the oval in front of me, I had a rare chance to stop and look around at our school and appreciate how lucky we are to educate and be educated at Koonung.
