Inter-school competitions & Sport

Koonung students perform well at the State Chess Tournament

Congratulations to Year 7 & 8 students Henry Jackson, Ben Harding, Dhruv Mehta & James Lonnen, who have been representing the College at chess competitions in recent weeks. Etienne Folliot (Laboratory Technician at Koonung College) remarked that not only did the four boys perform well in the competition, he was also very proud of they way they conducted themselves on the day.   Henry, who, along with Ben,  qualified for the state final  and has provided an overview of the event.

On Thursday 10 October there was a State Chess Tournament held at Kingswood College that Ben Harding and I attended. This was the follow up final to the inter-school tournament which was held last term. In each of these tournaments players are required to play 7 rounds of chess.  Each game has varying time limits but is normally around 15 minutes for each player. In third term Ben, Dhruv Mehta, James Lonnen and I played in the qualifying tournament. Unfortunately, Dhruv and James narrowly missed out on making it to the State Finals.  To qualify, a player required a score of 4.5.  Each game won is one point and a draw gets half a point. Dhruv got a score of 4 and James a score of 3.5. Ben and I were lucky enough to get 5 and 5.5 points and made it to the final. The State Final was a very strong tournament with many schools represented and players from Years 7 -12. Ben ended up on 4.5 points and I finished on 5 points, which put us both in the top 20 Year 7 & 8s for the tournament.  Thanks to Etienne Folliot for coming with us to the qualifying tournament. A reminder that Chess Club is held in room 29 every Friday lunchtime. If you are interested in entering the chess tournament next year I would greatly encourage you to come to Chess Club.

Senior Girls Cricket Team are State Premiers!

Our Senior Girls Cricket team played an amazing finals series to win the State Championships. Coach Mr Anderson was impressed with the skill level and competitiveness of the team, who arrived at matches prepared and ready to go! The team played really well together to convincingly win the grand final against Catherine Macauley College 188 - 93 runs. One of the many highlights was the standout batting performance from Caitlin Morando who scored 66 not out in the semi-final and also made 95 runs in the grand final. Well done girls!
