Cumberland

Ms Karen McArdle
Welcome
Welcome to Term 3! It is hard to believe we are at the half way mark for the year.
Semester 1 Student Reports
I trust that everyone received their child’s report for Semester 1. If you have any concerns about the report, please make an appointment to see their class teacher to discuss it thoroughly.
- If your child is struggling academically at school
- It is best to raise concerns early with the class teacher, by making an appointment.
- Ask your child’s teacher for strategies.
- Go through their tests or books to try and pinpoint the issue. Often, high levels of practice can build self-confidence, which is a key factor in learning. (Learning is about taking risks to deal with knowledge and skills we do not know or have YET! You need confidence to do this!)
- Purchase a textbook/workbook from the Newsagency and use it for practice. If necessary, go to the year level below and work up to the current year level.
- Spend time revising work so your child knows they know it! This can make all the difference.
- Talk to your child to see if they can articulate their issues.
- Let your child know you will support them through this and that you will work with them. Often, they cannot solve things themselves.
- Praise your child for their efforts and their achievements. Focusing on the positives builds self-esteem and confidence. This will make them more inclined to keep trying and putting the effort into achieving.
- Professional tutoring is also an option.
Cumberland Welcomes Felicity Donohue to the College
Miss Donohue will be replacing Miss Duell while she is on Parental Leave this semester in 3A. Miss Donohue comes from her most recent appointment as Head of English in a Chinese school. She has experience in the Primary years and is a welcome addition to our staff. I trust that you will welcome her into our community.
Short Film Festival Day of Excellence
Cumberland was abuzz on the last day of Term 2 with students channeling the likes of Steven Spielberg and Disney Pixar Studios talent, as they set about creating their films. On the day, the students learnt about camera angles, sound overlays, script writing, storyboarding, props, stop motion animations and how to use the iMovie app.
It was a wonderful day of learning! The students were thoroughly engaged throughout the day and much fun was had by all. Congratulations to Mrs Boon for helping to organise the day.
