Performing Arts

Year 10 Dance

Throughout term 1 the year 10 dance class explored a series of dance styles including Contemporary, Jazz, Hip-Hop and Capoeira. The class also participated in some workshops in the Dutch Exchange program which lifted their skills and confidence. At the end of term assembly all students performed with great focus and are congratulated for their commitment and enthusiasm. Well done to all!

Wakakirri Update

Rehearsals for Wakakirri, Australia’s largest performing arts challenge for school, are well underway. 60 enthusiastic CHS students are choreographing and rehearsing twice a week in preparation of the performance at the beginning of term 3 in Moonee Ponds. Throughout term 1 students explored many different options for the theme of their dance. The story for this year has come from Zoe Denton in year 8. Students have worked together to develop and workshop the story even further. The story is about the importance of finding out who you are, highlights the challenges of conformity, and sends the message to shine bright as the individual that you are. A powerful and positive message for our community.

Instrumental Music

Save the date for this semester’s Instrumental Music concert which is always a thoroughly entertaining evening that showcases the musical talents of our CHS students. The concert will be on Monday the 25th of June (Monday of week 11) in The Space at 5.30pm and cost is by gold coin donation. The concert will showcase small and large groups of instrumental music students and highlight some key achievements from this semester of learning. Come along and support our musicians!

Year 9 Production Class

This term the year 9 Production class is exploring the theatrical style of Children’s Theatre. Students are producing a script titled ‘Simply Cinderella’ and will be performing for 4 grade 2 and 3 classes from Coburg Primary school who will visit Coburg High School in week 9. Students will be responsible for directing, performing, designing, making and presenting all stagecraft elements. It is sure to be an exciting and entertaining afternoon for all.

Dutch Exchange

During term one the Coburg High School community hosted 9 students and two teachers from our sister school Maurick College in The Netherlands for a specialist Dance and Music program. The program was set up in 2014 by CHS teacher Lotte Riddle to give students opportunities to extend their performance skills and experience as well as enjoy a cultural exchange between the Aussies and the Dutchies. This year students had an exciting week of workshops including songwriting, contemporary dance, Commedia Del’arte, Jazz Band, as well as excursions to The Ministry of Dance and Melbourne City Ballet. Students also had the opportunity to share and exchange music and dance pieces they brought to the program. This year for our cultural excursion students travelled to Torquay where they had a surf lesson and enjoyed fish and chips by the ocean. The very hospitable and generous host families from our community also showed our guests the best Melbourne sights. The staff both from Coburg High School and Maurick College are very grateful for the support families provided to the students and the program, thank you! Special thank you to Steven Pam for recording the concert and activities throughout the week. Now, it is time to get ready for Coburg High School to visit Maurick College! Who have recently confirmed they will be able to host up to 14 of our students later in the year - what an exciting learning opportunity!
