National Day of Action Against Bullying

For students who signed the T-Shirts on the National Day of Action Against Bullying, they will be pleased to know that the they have been posted out around the country to the people they thought might promote the message of standing up fo those who are the victims of bullying. One of our enterprising Year Eight students has also taken some initiative and organised for the morning crew of Nova and hosts of 'The Front Bar' to promote this message. We thank them for the pics and well done to Montana Thornton of 8A for organising them. Let's see who else will put on a shirt for us!

Nelson Alexander Foundation Day Grant

Just before publication of our newsletter we received the news that our school has been successful in applying for the Nelson Alexander Foundation Day Grant. Each year the company donates the professional fee from one auction to a school or community group. With several thousand dollars now earmarked for our Library fit-out, the sale of this property will benefit our school community long into the future. Keep your eyes peeled for publicity around this event, with the local home for sale being promoted around Coburg.

ANZAC day

On Tuesday 24th April, a number of students in Years 8, 9 & 10 enjoyed a thoughtful play involving storytelling, live theatre performances, video and interactive content. A cast of veterans and actors combined history with the lived experiences and emotions of modern military service, written using real diary entries from WWI and political speeches of the time.

Victoria’s Journey of Remembrance helps students understand the legacy of ANZAC while reflecting on Australia’s role in the world and how comprehensively our military services have changed. This was a great way for CHS to thoughtfully reflect before ANZAC Day.

Year 8 Spanish

At the end of last term, Year 8 Spanish students made tapas as part of their unit of work "Viva España". Students learnt about the different cultures that exist in each state of Spain through a variety of activities including researching Spanish festivals and making a bilingual website for tourists to Spain. Students learnt that tapas is a snack that the Spanish have served with a drink. Each class was given three recipes in Spanish. The easiest and tastiest was "Pan con tomate" which is a simple but delicious snack that involves blending or grating fresh tomatoes and serving them on bread with a pinch of salt. This particular tapas comes from Catalonia. The other tapas was also simple and was a mixture of ricotta, olive oil and paprika served on bread also, this tapas is from the south of Spain. To complement the tapas students made Sangria from grape juice, lemonade and fresh fruit. While making the tapas was fun the best part was getting to try something different. Students were surprised how simple the recipes were and how delicious the tapas tasted.
