Classroom News - Year 1

What's on in Year 1

Week 10 and what a great term it has been. Students in Year 1 have been involved in a wide range of exciting activities and lessons covering various areas of the curriculum.

1L were very lucky to have  Miss Jayden Goodchild, from O'Connor for work experience. We were very lucky to have her as a helper, and the children were very excited to have her read them a story.

In Literacy, students have been learning about the bossy 'e' rule; an 'e' at the end of a word, makes the vowel sound say its name. To reinforce this, students have also learned a new song 'The Bossy 'e' Rap." In correspondence with NAIDOC week, students have been engaging in activities with an Indigenous Australian focus. Year 1 have worked very hard to build their reading, writing and comprehension skill and should be very proud of their efforts and achievements this term. Students are reminded that Thursday is both our home readers and library day. There is some fantastic children's literature in the library for students to read or to have an adult read to them.  As Dr. Seuss quotes ' The more that you read, the more things you know. The more that you learn, the more places you go.'

In Numeracy, students have learned about Division and are now starting their new topic 'Chance.' We have looked at different events and the chances of them happening; likely, unlikely, impossible or certain. Students have been thriving with the many hands-on activities during our numeracy lessons.

In Science, students have been very busy exploring different materials; wood, plastic, glass and rubber. We have looked at properties of various materials, how icy poles change from one state to another. We have worked with both cooked and uncooked spaghetti, with students attempting to build the tallest tower with uncooked spaghetti and marshmallows. This week students will be mixing different forms of liquids to create a Lava Lamp.

Congratulations to Tashabelle, who has been chosen as a finalist as part of the 2019 Let's Hang It! Exhibition at the New England Regional Art Museum from the 2nd to the 18th August.

Again, the Year 1 Team thank you for all your assistance and support in your child/ren's learning journey and wish you all a safe and blessed holiday break.
