June is Pride Month at the TDSB! This is an opportunity to celebrate diversity and raise awareness among all staff and students about the rich culture and history of our LGBTQ community. Here are some of the things we’re doing in TDSB to recognize Pride Month 2018:

  • Sharing curriculum resources with all schools
  • Providing every secondary school with a Pride flag to raise on their flagpole or hang in the school (elementary schools received their flag last year)
  • Raising the Pride flag at 5050 Yonge at 4 pm on Wednesday, June 6 – Please join us, everyone is welcome!
  • Announcing the winners of the Director’s Gay-Straight Alliance Awards (applications remain open until June 8th)
  • Participating in the city’s Toronto PRIDE 2018 Parade on Sunday, June 24 – Please join us, everyone is welcome!

Please visit www.tdsb.on.ca/pride to learn more about these activities and find out how you can get involved. Follow and join in the conversation on Twitter at #PrideTDSB, and share the poster with your community.

June is National Indigenous History Month

During the month of June, the TDSB honours National Indigenous History Month in recognition of the rights, histories and extraordinary achievements of Indigenous peoples in Canada. The unique cultures and perspectives of First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities are celebrated nationally and locally.

On June 21, the TDSB also recognizes National Indigenous Peoples Day. It is held around the time of the summer solstice - the longest day of the year - and is of spiritual significance for many Indigenous peoples. It is celebrated by family and community coming together for a feast, and it reminds people about the importance of staying grounded, humble and appreciative. For more information, including Indigenous history and success stories, visit the Government of Canada website.

June is Portuguese Speaking Heritage Month

During this month, the TDSB’s Portuguese-speaking communities are provided with opportunities to share their vibrant culture and traditions and also gain a better understanding of the Portuguese-speaking diaspora. The contributions of the Portuguese-speaking community to Canada’s history are vast as it includes the arts, sports, medicine and public life. Learn more on our Did You Know fact sheet

Events are being planned through the City of Toronto to recognize the Portuguese-speaking heritage including the Portuguese Parade on Sunday, June 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and join the team participating from the TDSB.

June is Italian Heritage Month

In June 2010, the Province passed the Italian Heritage Month Act, recognizing the important contributions immigrants have made in building Ontario's communities and the economic, political, social and cultural achievements of Italian Canadians throughout the province. Italian Canadian immigrants have played a prominent role in supporting Canada's post-war boom and Toronto's emergence as a diverse, vibrant world-class city.  During this month we celebrate the spirited culture and traditions of the Italian community with students, staff and community members of the Toronto District School Board and province of Ontario. Many activities are scheduled throughout Toronto to recognize the Italian heritage, including:

Guardians Beyond the Call, Wednesday, June 27, 2018

Italian Contemporary Film Festival, June 14 – 22, 2018

Taste of Little Italy, June 16 – 18, 2018
