Principal's Year-End Message
It is hard to believe that we are moving into our last week of the 2017-2018 school year. This year has been packed with activity. Northlea is such a wonderfully vibrant school community. Academics, arts, athletics, activism and accessibility are all core priorities for our work together.
This year, the students at Northlea have raised the bar in every way imaginable. Their devotion to community building through clubs, teams, group work and overall engagement in all aspects school life is inspiring. Every visitor who meets our students remarks on their poise, friendliness, cooperation and enthusiasm. It is a joy to work with your children and we hope they feel valued and recognized at Northlea.
I would like to extend appreciation to our professional team for their ongoing devotion to the Northlea community. Every school experience requires support from staff. Many of the programs are run by staff who choose to volunteer their time. The broad and numerous range of programs made available are a reflection of their commitment to teaching and learning at Northlea.
I will continue to remark on the incredible partnership we have from our parents. Our Home and School Executive lead by example by putting in many hours for anything and everything that needs doing. In addition to the H&S Executive team, we are fortunate to have dozens upon dozens of parent volunteers who help with everything. Some examples of these efforts include coordinating Family Fun Night, organizing the Welcome Back BBQ, driving teams, sorting books, joining field trips, being class parents and coordinating the Social Series.
Lastly, I want to wish Jane Wadden a hearty congratulations on her promotion to Principal at John Fisher Public School. It is difficult to capture the degree of contribution Jane has made to Northlea. She has worked tirelessly and, always, with humility. We are going to miss Jane very much and know that she will serve the John Fisher community well with the high level of commitment she demonstrated at Northlea. We warmly welcome Rachel Berger to Northlea and know that Jane will continue to be involved as a mentor to Rachel and as our colleague in a neighbourhood school.
ECO Schools
We are so pleased to update you about our latest achievement. Northlea earned GOLD status this year! It is wonderful to see our eco-literacy work recognized with this increased certification level.
We are also proud to have received our certificate for Northlea's involvement in Bike to School Week.
Pride Parade
Our Glitter Squad hosted a fantastic celebration on Friday afternoon. We were delighted to welcome MP Rob Oliphant and much appreciated his kind and heartfelt sentiments. Thank you to Ms. Capes for her leadership with this portfolio. Our school community is enriched by the dialogue about inclusion, belonging and enthusiasm for our diverse identities.
Below is a video of our celebration and the full speech from MP Rob Oliphant. His message was inspiring and we appreciated his involvement in our event.
Artist in Residence- Inna Gertsberg
WE ARE NORTHLEA
Inna Gertsberg has led numerous assemblies to launch our "We are Northlea" vision board. She will be returning this week to offer feedback on student work. Staff have been invited to sign up for a time for Inna to work with each class as this year comes to a close. Over the summer, Inna will consolidate the student images and ideas into something very special that will be shared when we return to school in September.

We will share the full staff list for the 2018-2019 school year with you soon. Our allocation for staff has increased so were able to hire a number of new people because Northlea is growing. We have also hired a wonderful team of teachers to carry on the excellence that our departing staff have demonstrated.
I realize there are often concerns about staffing French Immersion positions. That is a province-wide challenge. I am delighted to let you know that our French Immersion team is now fully staffed by teachers who are overjoyed to be at Northlea. We are required to work within the timelines and guidelines set out by TDSB Employee Services and we feel fortunate to have secured excellent teachers during the staffing rounds. System-wide, the demand for French Immersion teachers is high. We thank them for choosing Northlea. We have confidence that the people joining us will serve your children very well and will be welcome additions to the Northlea community.
